I. Call to Order: Chair Dickinson called the meeting to order at 7:10 p.m.
II. Additions or Changes to Agenda – Golan asked to add one item to the agenda,
concerning Chinqua Penn Plantation. Dickinson agreed to add to the information items.
III. Approval of Minutes –Lelekacs and Golan pointed out three typos for correction. Golan
motioned to accept the March 28 minutes as amended. Lelekacs seconded the motion
and it was approved unanimously.
IV. Reports
– a. Tracking the Relocation of Historic Structures: Shaw reported that he had spoken
with Jenks Clayton (Tax Administrator) and Susan Mellott (Building Official) about
the HPC’s March 1 memo concerning the tracking of relocated structures in the
county. Shaw said both were favorable to the idea, and would confer with their
before setting up a meeting to discuss with HPC member(s).
- b. Local Landmark Application: John S. Pope Farm: Dickinson introduced an
application for Local Landmark consideration for the John S. Pope Farm. He
recommended postponing any action on the application until the HPC had completed
an evaluation. He asked Shaw to provide evaluation score sheets and examples of
previous HPC evaluations at the May meeting.
V. Discussion Items
-- a. Historic Preservation Summit (May 3) – Dickinson called attention to the draft
agenda and asked Ireland to explain plans for the keynote address. Ireland
recommended a presentation about three notable cemeteries in Orange County.
Dickinson reviewed the rest of the agenda. It was agreed that the HPC would ask
participants to select one set of issues for a discussion group. Each group will be
asked to a) review list of issues, b) discuss progress since 2009, c) add new issues
d) identify top three, and e) discuss action strategies. The groups will then be asked
to report out to the whole group, followed by closing remarks by Dickinson.
-- b. Historic Preservation Month (May 2012) – HPC members discussed a draft
abstract and proclamation for board of commissioner consideration on May 15. They
also discussed plans for annual photo contest in collaboration with the Orange
County Museum. Shaw reported the Museum board had decided to delay the photo
contest until June or July, and the HPC agreed to ask to proceed with collaboration.
VI. Information Items – Golan reported on his work at the historic Chinqua Penn Plantation
in Reidsville. HPC members received information on a UNC Library exhibit, a Duke
documentary on the Whitted building (Durham), and a workshop in Hendersonville.
VII. The meeting adjourned at 9:25 p.m.
