HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts Commission minutes 031113FROM: Orange County Arts Commission SUBJECT: Monthly Meeting DATE: March 11, 2013 LOCATION: Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, Chapel Hill MEMBERS PRESENT: Charles Hochman, Gordon Jameson, Emily Lees, Cher Tuskey MEMBERS ABSENT: Lindsey Alexander, Nedra Bradsher, Kate Dickson, Bronwyn Merritt, Leah Rade, Rebecca Ray, Todd Neal, Alice Levinson, Geoffrey Hathaway STAFF PRESENT: Martha Shannon Meeting called to order at 6:00 PM NO QUORUM Topic A Discussion Point: Review of January & February 2013 Minutes Decision/Vote(s): No Vote taken because a quorum was not present. Action Item: None Topic B Discussion Point: Director’s Report Decision/Vote(s): -- Staff updated Board on: the Budget will remain relatively flat for FY14. - 4th U.S. Congressional District was redrawn and now goes from Burlington to Fayetteville. Durham is in multiple districts. It is OCAC’s turn to host the District-wide Reception May 2 which has been moved by Rep. David Price’s office to the Museum of Art in Raleigh. OCAC is responsible for paying for this event and sending judges. Gordon Jameson volunteered to judge, if available (date TDB). – Remaining 2013 Artists Salon Series dates are 5/3, 8/23, and 11/15. -- The name of volunteer applicant Devra Thomas was submitted to the BOCC for possible OCAC appointment at their March 19, 2013 meeting. Staff knows of another potential candidate for the board and will ask if that person is interested. -- Hillsborough children’s author, educator, and presenter John Claude Bemis has been chosen as the 2013 Piedmont Laureate. – Andrea Riley had to resign because she accepted a part-time job with the Visitors Bureau. It may be possible to keep the OCAC board members whose current terms are ending in March, 2013 until their replacements are appointed by the BOCC. Action Item: None Topic C Discussion Point: Ad Hoc Committees and Liaison Reports Decision/Vote(s): Gordon Jameson reported from the Visitors Bureau meeting that there will be a new hotel in Carrboro. Andrea Riley has resigned so we need another liaison for the Orange County Cultural Center (OCCC). Todd Neal was not present to report on the Public Art committee, but this subject was discussed in the director’s report. Rebecca Ray was not present to discuss the possible School Project. Action Item: None Topic D Discussion Point: Annual Conflict of Interest Policy Renewal Decision/Vote(s): There was a discussion of the document. Action Item: Staff was asked to email it to the full board for their review and acceptance of it via email. Meeting adjourned at 6:50 PM
