HomeMy WebLinkAboutArts Commission minutes 101413 FROM: Orange County Arts Commission SUBJECT: Monthly Meeting DATE: October 14, 2013 LOCATION: Chapel Hill/Orange County Visitors Bureau, Chapel Hill ____________________________________________________________________________________________ MEMBERS PRESENT: Katherine Dickson, Geoffrey Hathaway, Deborah Hepp, Gordon Jameson, Emily Lees, Devra Thomas, Cher Tuskey, Christopher Wehrman MEMBERS ABSENT: Lindsey Alexander, Alice Levinson, Ashley Nissler, Rebecca Ray STAFF PRESENT: Martha Shannon ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Meeting called to order at 6:00 PM Topic A Discussion Point: Review of September 2013 Minutes Decision/Vote(s): Motion to accept minutes Action Item: Approved Topic B Discussion Point: Director’s Report Decision/Vote(s): Around 40 people attended John Claude Bemis’ children’s authors’ roundtable at Flyleaf Books on 10/5. This was a special project of the 2013 Piedmont Laureate in Triangle independent book stores. Only 1 application has been received for the 2014 Piedmont Laureate (authors of short fiction). The application process will be reopened with a new application deadline. Festifall went well. Thirty (30) people signed up to be on our email list. The dates for the 2014 Artists’ Salons are 2/21, 5/16, 8/15 and 11/21. The October 2013 OCAC meeting is the last one for Bronwyn Merritt, Charles Hochman & Leah Rade. Their 6-month extensions have expired. Our Fall 2013 grant application deadline is 11/21/13. Action Item: None Topic C Discussion Point: Volunteer Applications for OCAC Board Decision/Vote(s): Three new board members are needed to replace Charles Hochman, Bronwyn Merritt and Leah Rade. Staff and board will continue to work to recruit new members. The name of Volunteer Applicant Doris A. Friend was selected to move forward if she is still interested and available to serve. Action Item: Staff will contact the applicant and submit her name to the Clerk for possible appointment. Topic D Discussion Point: Liaison’s Report & Ad Hoc Committees Decision/Vote(s): Brief CHOCVB report given. Trend is less foot traffic, but increased website visits. Topic of possibly relocating the Visitors Bureau will be discussed at their next meeting on 10/16/13. Action Item: None Topic E Discussion Point: Agenda Additions/Old Business/New Business Decision/Vote(s): New website design is in progress. Hopefully it will be ready by the end of the year. It was mentioned that the ArtsCenter may be moving. The Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership is doing a cultural mapping exercise. Staff will emphasize the reference RE: serving on the OCAC board in our e- newsletter. It might be a good time to get public art back on the BOCC’s radar by creating guidelines for accepting gifts of art to Orange County. The next OCAC meeting will be 11/11 at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough. Action Item: Debbie Hepp volunteered to contact the Town of Chapel Hill RE: their guidelines for accepting gifts of art. Meeting adjourned at 6:45 PM
