PURPOSE: To adopt a Resolution of Appreciation thanking students from Virginia Tech for
work they performed at the Occaneechi Native American village from March 4-9, 2001.
BACKGROUND: Fifteen students from Virginia Tech spent their spring break helping to rebuild
and restore the Occannechi village historic site on the banks of the Eno River in downtown
Hillsborough.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt a Resolution of
Appreciation thanking students from Virginia Polytechnic Institute for their service to the citizens
of Orange County through the work they performed to help restore the Occaneechi Native
American village.

RESOLUTION OF APPRECIATION
TO STUDENTS FROM
VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE
FOR THEIR WORK AT THE OCCANEECHI VILLAGE
WHEREAS, the Town of Hillsborough has a rich and culturally diverse history, reflected in the
recreation of the historically significant Occaneechi Native American village along
the banks of the Eno River; and,
WHEREAS, thousands of visitors tour the Occaneechi village site each year to learn and
experience haw Native Americans lived and worked hundreds of yeazs ago; and,
WHEREAS, over the yeazs, periodic flooding of the Eno has damaged the Occaneechi village,
causing it to fall into disrepair; and,
WHEREAS, from Mazch 4-9, fifteen Virginia Tech students spent their spring break helping to
restore damage to the Occaneechi village; and,
WHEREAS, under the guidance of tribal members John Blackfeather Jefferies and Joe Lopez,
the students made repairs to the site, trimmed brush, cleaned along the river and
creek banks, cut saplings to construct two new lodges, and performed other tasks
associated with the restoration of the village; and,
WHEREAS, the hard work of these students enhanced the visual aspects of the Occaneechi.
village, which once again takes its place as one of the most historically significant
sites for visitors to Orange County.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Orange County Boazd of Commissioners expresses
its sincere appreciation and gratitude to Shane Johnson, Aaron Hood, Cazlos
Fernandez, Melanie Murray, Richard Hite, Abdullah Al Masud, Reuben Hintz,
Chazles Hockenbrought, David Ficke, Angie Cazlon, Katherine Alexander, Kristen
Cantu, Latoya King, Brandon Boe and Jason Herran of Virginia Polytechnic
Institute, for their service to the citizens of Orange County through their restoration
ofthe Occaneechi Native American village on the banks of the Eno River.
