BACKGROUND: April is traditionally recognized as Public Health Month in North Carolina. National organizations such as the National Association of City and County Health Officials (NACCHO) and the American Public Health Association (APHA) recognize a week in April as public health week. The Orange County Health Department is planning a variety of activities in Orange County as found on the attached "Public Health Month Activities in Orange County." Health education, screening, outreach, and public awareness events are scheduled. FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact associated with this item. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached proclamation designating April as Public Health Month in Orange County. ORANGE CDUNTYBOARD OF COMMISSIONERS PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH PROCLAMATION APRIL 2001 Whereas, Over the past SO years, the United States has achieved significant increases in life expectancy and reductions in the incidence of injury, disability and disease, Whereas, Of the SD additional years of life expectancy we have gained since the turn of the century, the public health approach is credited with the majority-approximately 25 years--of our improvements in our health status and expanded life expectancy, Whereas, Promoting the health and weld-being of all residents of Orange County is paramount; and Whereas, Controlling and eliminating communicable diseases are necessary to ensure that our communities are healthy places in which to live; and . Whereas, Protecting residents by safeguarding water and food supplies and monitoring waste discharge systems is critical for environmental and personal health; and Whereas, Encouraging healthy lifestyle behaviors assures optimal quality of life and improved health status; and Whereas, Ensuring the optimal growth and development for all Orange County children is vital for the future of our communities; and - --_: Whereas, Public Health contributes to the prosperity of Orange County residents by promoting health, preventing disease, and protecting the environment, everyday, every where, and for everybody regardless of religious, ethnic or socioeconomic background; Whereas Public Health Month provides the focused opportunity for the public and public health professionals to celebrate collaborative efforts that have led to community health successes and forge new partnerships to battle emerging threats; and Whereas Public Health Month provides an opportunity to highlight and commend the efforts of public health professionals to protect, promote and enhance the health of all residents across Orange County; and Therefore, We hereby proclaim April 2001 as PUBLIC HEALTH MONTH in Orange County.
