BACKGROUND: The ArtsCenter (TAC) works with community members and artists to present, produce and teach all artistic disciplines. TAC works with area arts and community organizations to plan culturally diverse programs that assist but do not duplicate other programming efforts. The five programming areas include Artschool classes; Children and Family Programs; Concerts; Theater; and Visual Arts. "Kid's Day" is a free, day-long festival for children and their families. It will salute past and future participants through amulti-cultural and multi-disciplinary arts celebration which will include possible performances by the youth group Sons of Steel; Rags to Riches Theater Company; Pica Flor; Donovan and his life-sized puppets; Rainbow the Clown; four to six workshops taught by professional Artschool instructors (which may include such classes as cartooning, clay handbuilding, music for toddlers, mask making, creative drama, writing through art); and a celebration lunch including pizza and an ArtsCenter 25~' year birthday cake. The festival is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2001, from 10am to 5pm, at the TAC. It is anticipated that 300 to 500 children and their parents will attend this event. FINANCIAL IMPACT: $1,500 from the Manager's Miscellaneous Account has been identified to support this initiative. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board endorse the "Kids' Day Festival" and the Manager's expenditure of $1500 to support this program. Organization: The ArtsCenter Project: Kids' Day Sponsorship Request 2 Oreanization Description: The ArtsCenter The ArtsCenter creates an environment for exploring and appreciating artistic expression SCOPE: The ArtsCenter (TAC), a private not-for profit organization, links art, artists and audiences in Orange County through programs, events and classes designed in response to community needs and interests. The co-existence of visual, performing and literary arts in one accessible facility encourages multi-disciplinary collaborations and provides wide-ranging experiences for professionals, amateurs and non-artists of all ages to learn about and participate in visual and performing arts. GOALS: The goals of TAC are to facilitate arts appreciation in the community; to encourage diverse artistic and cultural expression; to establish community partnerships; and to support new artists. To accomplish these goals TAC staff works with community members and artists to present, produce and teach all artistic disciplines. TAC works with area arts and community organizations to plan culturally diverse programs that assist but do not duplicate other programming. North Carolina artists' participation is promoted in all phases of programming. SERVICES: TAC offers programming in five areas: • ArtSchool classes in visual, literary and performing arts • Children and Family Programs which include classes, summer camp and performing arts far children, parents and school groups; and outreach within area schools. • Concerts which feature world, traditional, papulaz and jazz music from local and nationally- recognized groups; • Theater which includes performances by professional touring companies, community theater, traditional, non-traditional and improvisational groups; • Visual Arts exhibiting 12 community-oriented shows each yeaz by local artists in The ArtsCenter Gallery: Scholarships and work/study positions are available for TAC classes. Within the 19,000 sq. $. facility all performance areas, gallery space and 75 percent of the classroom space is accessible to the disabled. TAC, in conjunction with three group homes and North Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation, provides socialization training and job skills training for re-entry into the workplace. TAC also works with laca.l schools, fraternity and sorority community service programs to provide structured exposure to technical theater and arts administration. In addition to providing space for the Carrboro Senior Center, TAC receives thousands of hours of volunteer support from members of the Retired Seniors Volunteer program and seniors at lazge. STRUCTURE: TAC was incorporated in 1975. TAC's 13-member board includes five women, two African-Americans and one Asian American. Nine staff members (7 full-time) operate TAC with the help of over 200 volunteers who contribute more than 12,000 hours annually. TAC has almost 1,000 contributing Friends and Subscribers. ORANGE COUNTY CONNECTIONS: In the past year, TAC offered 393 art classes, serving 2,687 area adults and youngsters. Orange County children have benefited from $1,800 in ArtSchool scholazships. Fiscal year 1999-2000 saw 84 concerts featuring 45 groups with North Cazolina connections, 44 of which had at least one Orange County tie. Over the year, 11 Jazz Jams featuring 15- 20 musicians per event were largely represented by Orange County players. Children and Family Programs annually serves more than 10,000 children within Orange County's borders. Organization: The ArtsCenter Project: Kids' Day Sponsorship Request Proiect Descriution: Kids' Dav - Throughout its 25-year history in. service of art and artists, TAC has been a resource for children and families to enjoy the arts together and to celebrate individual creativity. WHAT IS IT?: Kids' Day is a free, day-long, multi-cultural, multidisciplinary arts festival for children and families. In addition to a celebration of TAC's 25 years of programming excellence, this free festival is intended to thank families for their past support, provide information about scholarships for upcoming Children and Family programs; and introduce more families to TAC's abundance of performances and learning opportunities. Children and Family Programs, which served almost 20,000 children in the Piedmont last year, includes: • The ArtSchool offers courses that.nurture the creativity in each individual. Regularly scheduled courses are offered for children in visual and performing arts. Scheduled by semester, classes are held after school and on Saturdays. Other courses for parents and toddler; are held on weekday mornings. Typical course offerings include 2-D and 3-D visual art projects, music and movement for preschoolers, clay and theater courses, among others. Last year, The ArtSchool served 328 youth. • The School Show Series meets a need for accessible, quality arts.education for students and educators. The Series presents high quality, age appropriate performing arts programs for students from over 160 schools throughout NC. The series supplements school curricula in the arts, language arts, social studies, science and multicultural education Performances and residences are offered either at TAC or in local schools or conuntuiity organizations. This service saves the schools and organizations valuable time and resources and makes participation affordable, as TAC does not charge for booking. Last year, The School Show Series served 5,674 students and teachers at TAC and 11,648 students and teachers through outreach programming. • The SuperFun Series i5 a monthly series of.perfornung arts programs for children and families held at TAC on Saturday mornings and holiday evenings from October through April. Triangle area artists and touring performers present short programs geared toward young clWdren. Last year, SuperFun provided 1,123 children and their families with high quality, age appropriate, multi-cultural and multi- disciplinary arts experiences. • IKidsCamp is a creative arts summer camp for children ages 6-12. Theme-based sessions integrate visual arts, theater, dance and music with subjects such as history, multicultural differences, science, the environment, and technology. KidsCamp is offered in half-or full~iay segments in four two-week sessions. Each session culminates in a family sharing day. Last year, KidsCamp served 250 children. WHEN AND WHERE?: Kids' Day will be held on Saturday, Apri121, 2001 at TAC. Activities will take place both indoors and out from approximately 10 a.m. through S p.m. HOW IS liT MARKETED?: Kids' Day will be publicized in TAC's February, March and April newsletter, ArtsCenter Live (circ. 18,000/month) and in the Winter/Spring ArtSchool course catalogue (circ. 15,000), ArtSchool catalogues are also distributed in Orange Co. public schools.
