Call to Order A. The meeting was called to order at 6:30pm by Mr. Matt Case, Co-Chair. A quorum was present. II. Introductions A. Human Relations Commission (HRC) members, Human Rights & Relations (HR&R) staff, shared “what’s new and what’s good’. III. Public Comment A. Mr. Case reported that the guest featured on the agenda, Mr. Seamus O’Neill, will not be able to attend this meeting. We hope to hear from him on the next meeting. 1 IV. Minutes Approval – April 8, 2019 A. HRC members reviewed the minutes from the previous HRC meeting. HRC members identified an error on the attendance roster, and made suggestions for it to be modified. Ms. Stephanie Harrell’s name appeared twice as an attendee. Mr. Case made a motion to approve the April minutes with the change. Mrs. Ana Garcia-Turner seconded the motion. All were in favor to approve the minutes. V. County Updates A. Ms. Annette Moore reminded HRC member of their Fair Housing training on June 1, 2019 at the Whitted building from 9am-4pm. Stella Adams will be the trainer. Food will be provided and organized by HR&R staff. B. Ms. Moore reminded members that there will be no meeting July 2019. She encouraged sub-committees to correspond with one another during that time. C. Ms. Moore provided a debriefing on the Community Dinner. There were over 600 in attendance, and the event went well. Everyone was fed, and there was hardly any leftover food. Ms. Moore explained the she and Ms. Nerys Levy discussed ideas of having smaller community-based, community dinners in the northern part of the county. Ms. Moore suggested that this may be something the HRC could be involved with. D. Ms. Moore discussed working more with young people and events catered to young people. She explained how, in the past, the HRC hosted a youth summit. She invited members to accompany HR&R staff with developing ideas for young people. E. Ms. Moore discussed working Government Alliance on Race & Equity (GARE) and how the Orange County Government is taking an interest on working on racial equity and imbed a racial equity in our “systems”. VI. Updates A. Ms. Moore reported that Dr. Deborah Stroman, Ms. Rebecca High, and Ms. Stephanie Harrell are coming up for reappointment. Ms. Joy Preslar’s term will expire June 2019. Ms. Rebecca High announced she will be moving out of state in the fall of 2019. B. Ms. Tara May reported that Ms. Stephanie Harrell left word that she will be sending out the blog sign-up sheet to HRC members. C. HRC members will review some of the HRC candidates for the June 2019 meeting. VII. HRC Events & Committee Reports A. Pauli Murray 1. HRC members discussed promoting the ceremony this year. HRC members suggested getting in the hands of youth groups and the schools in the county. Ms. May explained how HR&R staff has reached out to staff members and representatives of the schools in the county, in the past. In order to increase contestant submissions, HR&R staff will work with HRC members to get the word out sooner to schools and organizations that work with young people. 2 B. Forum Mr. Case reviewed the planned date of September 14, 2019. Sub-committee members will arrange a time to meet to begin planning. This sub-committee will keep Ms. May notified of their plans. C. Community Read 1. HRC members debriefed on the previous session. There were about 8 people in attendance. Those in attendance had meaningful conversation about the reading and around residential evictions. 2. HRC will wait to discuss book ideas for the next read, and allow Dr. Debby Stroman to lead the discussion. VIII. Other Business/Announcements/Upcoming events IX. Adjourn A. The meeting was adjourned at 7:15pm. B. NEXT MEETING: June 10, 2019 6:00pm at Animal Services in Chapel Hill. 3
