MINUTES
Tuesday, June 11, 2019
Passmore Center
PRESENT: (Board Members) Mary Altpeter, Jenny Womack, Jeff Charles – Board candidate, Peg Cohn, Vibeke

1. Introductions and Announcements
a. Jeff Charles announced that he is a member of the Town of Chapel Hill Senior Citizen & Handicap
Advisory Board. He will serve as our liaison to the Chapel Hill board

Director’s Report
4. Staff updates
a. New Pastoral Counseling Intern – Jill Bergkamp, a Clinical Pastoral Education Program student from UNC
Healthcare. She will be with us 2.5 days a week focused on exploring social groups at both centers to
expand social connections with older adults. Office hours at Seymour: Monday & Friday; Passmore:
Thursday. Peg Cohn offered to provide space at Carol Woods and to introduce her to their chaplain
b. UNC School of Public Health Summer Practicum Student – Emily Morgan from the UNC School of Public
Health, MPH candidate. Emily will work on our two VC 55+ pilot projects: Patient Navigator/Health and
Mail Management. This is a 10 week summer practicum
c. UNC School of Social Work Intern – Eddie Alcorn – Summer placement, working on revitalize Music &
Memory and helping the Aging Transitions team analyze individual work flow and data. Position is full-
time through August 1.
d. Wellness Interns from NCCU – Undergrad’s Cierra Hoover and Lundan Winchester will be coming the
first week of July from Exercise Physiology and Recreation Therapy program
5. National Council on Aging Conference – The Seymour Center program, "Making Technology Easier for Seniors
Expo" won first place in the Technology category for the 2018 National Institute of Senior Centers Programs of
Excellence! Seymour Center’s Programs and Operations Manager, Cydnee Sims, will receive the award.
6. 2nd Annual Working and Volunteering after Retirement – Exploring Your Options Workshop: July 17, 8:30 am -1
pm at Durham Tech – Orange County Campus mark your calendar to attend.
7. Voter ID Forums: Monday, July 15, Seymour Center; and Thursday, August 8, Passmore Center. Mark you
calendar to attend and share with others. The event will educate voters about the new Voter ID law, resources
and how to get involved.
8. Lee Pavao’s Memorial Service: July 28, Seymour Center – Janice prepared a resolution for the BOCC to be
presented to the family. Family are exploring the possibility with staff for a room at the Seymour Center be
named after him for his extensive work on behalf of older adults in Orange County and the Seymour Center.
BOCC will review this at a later date. The Friends of the Seymour Center are accepting any donations for Lee
and the family has set up website for donations. Donations to be presented to the Friends of Seymour Center
Continuing Business
9. Recognition and thanks to Chair Peggy Cohn who is as retiring from the Advisory Board on Aging after serving 15
years

10. Election of vice chair
a. Colin Austin was elected by acclamation
11. Board Vacancies – The recommendation to appoint Jeff Charles to the Board will be addressed by the BOCC
after their summer break. We are still looking for Board representation from central-northern Orange,
preferably an African-American. Also looking for Mandarin speaking representative. Please let Janice know if you
know of a good candidate
12. Schedule Board orientation – Janice scheduled orientation for new Board members (Jenny, Rachel and Jeff) on
August 9, from 1-3pm
13. Soltys Center Renovation – Initial renovation has been done. Mold remediation – Phase 2 will start in the next
fiscal year
14. Seymour Center Renovation Update – Contract coming up on BOCC agenda on June 18. Negotiating with lowest
bidder and to include items Aging considers essential, not alternative, to avoid costs down the road (closet,
motorized wall in Great Hall, and replacing the existing Great Hall floor). Negotiating with the contractor and
County
15. 2019-20 Budget Update – We asked for $2k for interpreter services for Karen and Burmese. Orange County
Department of Social Services (DSS) asked for $50K for in-home services. Aging Transitions works closely with
DSS to provide in-home services for qualifying older adults
a. Negotiating with Florence Gray Soltys Adult Day Health and Triangle J AAA for OCDOA to receive Solyts’
unspent $10k block grant monies. After approval and budget amendment, Aging will use the $10K to
purchase, replace or refurbish Seymour Center fitness equipment.
b. Janice has been asked to serve on census count committee and requested staff back-up (Beverly) for the
important task of counting older adults. An accurate count of older adults is important for the allocation
of Federal and State funding.
New Business
16. Presentation on new Care Partner Collaborative – Lisa Meinert: Care Partner Collaborative is a program of the
Aging Transitions division to support caregivers in the community. Emphasis on families living with dementia and
people with other conditions such as Parkinson’s. The program is offered on Wednesdays and connects
participants to programs and activities already in place at the Seymour Center. It is a type of respite, but not in
the traditional sense. Caregiver partners come with the person to support them; engage in a learning lab setting;
be together and comfortable with being out and social; form relationships, and engage in programs. In addition,
Lisa now leads the Dementia Friendly Business (DFB) program. Both programs will refer participants to other
Aging Transitions programs as appropriate. Senior Health Advocacy and Resource Partners of Orange County
(SHARP) members are now trained to support DFB in a train-the-trainer role, assisting Lisa.
2017-22 Master Aging Plan
17. Held MAP Steering Committee meeting on June 7 – at Carol Woods. Thank you to Carol Woods for hosting and
for providing breakfast. A different format utilizing informational domain posters highlighting year 2
accomplishments and workgroup session focusing on year 3 priorities. Followed by a time for
organizations/partners to share their success & biggest accomplishment as related to MAP initiatives.
18. Quarterly MAP updates in August –Workgroups will provide Year 2 updates over two board meetings beginning
in August. Focus on Year 2 successes & challenges for reports.
Continuing Projects
19. Project EngAGE Recruitment Class Five – Six enrolled thus far with recruitment continuing. Seeking
minority/male representatives from central & northern Orange County. Program starts Sept. 12. Refer nominees
to Shenae. Must be age 55+.

20. Dementia Friendly Business Campaign – Currently training 99th partner, we will plan a special event for 100th

22. Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee – Michael Zuber
23. Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee – Vibeke Talley: Vibeke reported that the NHCAC is continuing
work and that they need a couple of board members. Parkview Nursing Home is slowly filling up. Bariatric floor
is also available. Peak Resources purchased Brookshire with new contractor for rehab.
24. Housing – Keith Cook/Dick White
25. Friends of the Passmore Center – Yard Sale happened but ended early due to rain.
26. Friends of the Seymour Center – Planning a board retreat and reorganization.
