Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards: none Boards/Commissions applied for: Orange County Climate Council Background, education and experience relevant to this board: When I lived in Sebastopol California, I was a founding member and active organizer of a local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organization (BikeWalk Sebastopol). Our organization helped move forward a number of local bike and pedestrian projects. I have experience working with local government as well as a long-term interest in looking at how government can support more environmentally friendly transportation methods. Additionally, when in California, I organized and ran a LEED green building certification project for a 12-unit live-work development project. This project provides me a good understanding of the construction industry and how buildings can be more efficient. I also was an owner and manager of a bicycle shop giving me an understanding of the needs of small retail businesses. I recently completed a Masters in Industrial Design at NCSU. This degree provides me with an 15 Page 2 of 2 Charity Kirk understanding of and respect for the needs of local industry. I have a diverse understanding of the ways in which humans impact the environment and a drive to learn what others are doing as well as present, discuss and push for new ways of doing things. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I want to become more locally involved and feel I could make a positive contribution on this board based on my past experiences and strong interest in this area. Conflict of Interest: Orange County Planning Board (REQUIRES DISCLOSURE STATEMENT) Background, education and experience relevant to this board: When I lived in Sebastopol California, I worked for an architect for a number of years gaining an understanding of the construction industry and local planning requirements and also organizing and running a LEED green building certification project. While completing my Masters in Industrial Design at NCSU I took a number of classes in Landscape Architecture (one specifically that looked at local planning requirements)as well as a course titled Biodiversity Conservation in Urban Regions. With these courses and prior experience I know how planning policy impacts our environment and the way we live. I am interested in helping guide this process to become more considerate of the environment and of a diverse range of human needs and experiences. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I would like to be a new pragmatic environmentalist voice on the committee. I am interested in helping craft planning policy that pushes for a more sustainable vision of the future. I pursued a career path in evolutionary genetics and have a solid education and rigorous training in a particularly math and data-heavy field of biology, along with deep thinking, research and written communication. Throughout, I maintained a strong interest in environmental and especially climate change issues. I gravitated towards educating myself about what I could do in my personal life. I figured I d leave the structural change to those who were in government and my influence would be through my own actions, personal interactions and my vote. Being a bit geeky, I kept reading and educating myself about the structural change. I became increasingly concerned that change wasn t happening fast enough or to a sufficient degree, but felt I couldn t actually do anything at a higher level, because I wasn t trained in politics or environmental science. Since moving to Chapel Hill about five years ago, I started paying attention to local politics and have revised my opinion. I think that even without formal training in environmental science, there s a role I can play in change that is bigger than personal choices. Additionally, I ve done a little writing on toxins for the Duke Superfund Center and been active in actions at my UU congregation to make environmental concerns, 17 Page 2 of 2 Kristie Mather especially climate change, a bigger focus. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I want to do more to slow climate change and start adaptation plans than is possible at a personal level. We haven t done enough, and I think we ve got to have more folks working on climate change. The Climate Council seems a place where action can happen at a local level and I think I can be a valuable contributor. Local development and growth is a major piece - positive or negative-of how we can lessen climate change while understanding that some change is now inevitable and adaptation has to be part of the game. I can bring a combination of passion and analytical thinking to the council. Conflict of Interest: Commission for the Environment Background, education and experience relevant to this board: As long as I can remember I ve been developing a consciousness that the current American culture with an inclination towards disposability and convenience above all else is inconsistent with a planet that is a comfortable place for humans and many other living creatures. I pursued a career path in evolutionary genetics and have a solid education and rigorous training in a particularly math and data-heavy field of biology, along with deep thinking, research and written communication. Throughout, I maintained a strong interest in environmental issues. I gravitated towards educating myself about what I could do in my personal life. I figured I d leave the structural change to those who were in government and my influence would be through my own actions, personal interactions and my vote. Being a bit geeky, I kept reading and educating myself about the structural change. I became increasingly concerned about the many areas in which humans are still acting more destructively than constructively, but felt I couldn t actually do anything at a higher level, because I wasn t trained in politics or environmental science. Since moving to Chapel Hill about 5 years ago, I started paying attention to local politics and have revised my opinion. I think that even without formal training in environmental science, there s a role I can play in change that is bigger than personal actions. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I m concerned about the choices that our communities are making that are at odds with sustainability and environmental health. My personal choices aren t going to be enough and I want to ensure that our community makes structural choices that are sustainable and protect the sort of environment that is healthy for humans and other living creatures. I think I can be a valuable contributor. I can bring a combination of passion and analytical thinking to the committee. I have also participated in the NC Department of Environmental Quality s efforts to develop a clean energy plan for the state. This experience would allow to help the climate council consider how local actions can support efforts at the state and federal levels, as well as strategies to use local action to spur broader action. I was a citizen scientist with my kids monitoring/maintaining the health of the Blackstone river via the Audubon society. I ve been looking forward to involving myself back into my new community and I hope you give me a chance to help you meet the great goals of the Orange County Climate Council. Thanks for your consideration. Past Service on Orange County Advisory Boards: None at this time, I m learning about the political structure and opportunities in Hillsborough and Orange County since mid 2017. Boards/Commissions applied for: Orange County Climate Council Background, education and experience relevant to this board: I m a trained engineer and raised my children as environmentalists and hopefully taught them how live, using the triple bottom line (3P s) method. I earned a NABCEP certification in solar PV installation in 2010, have written over 6 successful grants for solar, wind, small hydro projects and EV charging stations in MA and in NC. We used two of the grants to create a learning opportunity for 6-12 grade with them video taping the Solar PV installation and presenting to the student body. I ve been self-employed the majority of my life and understand how to help create; a goal, a project team to achieve that goal and the infrastructure to maintain the solution installed. My decade long work with my past municipality taught me about the intricacies of working in this space and how to present new ideas to early adopters and the general citizenry. 21 Page 2 of 2 Jim O'Connor Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I believe it s up to all of us to educate the majority about how important it is to attack climate change now, however they think it was created. I still can t believe I marched on Washington to hopefully help our politicians believe in science! I believe my unique experiences and passion can help the Council reach its goals to create climate change action, identify both joint and individual opportunities to reduce GHG emissions while improving air quality for all. Conflict of Interest: It depends, I don t know exactly what renewable energy projects I will be working on and if they will be in Orange County(none to date). I don t know exactly what the Council s work will include but I know I will be able to provide valuable contributions to the council. My previous role as Energy Committee Chair various members recused themselves as needed and it allowed us to attract the highest quality consultants which afforded us to quickly reach multiple milestones. (The UNC MPA program is very focused on local government management.) Finally, my current role as the UNC Chapel Hill Policy Analyst has given me an opportunity to work across silos and engage with key stakeholders in multiple organizations within UNC and outside UNC to improve and manage the policy creation, updating, and retirement process for UNC Chapel Hill. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I believe climate change is the greatest threat to the American national security. I want to use my research, writing, and presentation skills, my formal local government training, and my experience working across organizational silos to engage with key stakeholders to help Orange County think strategically about the best way to mitigate the impact of climate change in Orange County and also serve as a model for other counties across the state and the nation. 25 Page 2 of 2 Matthew Teal Conflict of Interest: Supplemental Questions: Boards/Commissions appointments: Other Comments: This application was current on: 6/21/2019 3:57:27 PM Date Printed: 6/24/2019 26 Page 1 of 2 Bill Ward Volunteer Application Orange County Advisory Boards and Commissions Name: Dr Bill Ward Name Called: Home Address: 107 Forest Ridge Drive Chapel Hill NC 27514 Phone (Day): 9199602587 Phone (Evening): 9199602587 Phone (Cell): 9194481613 Email: sandbward@mindspring.com Place of Employment: Retired Job Title: Orange County Volunteer Year of OC Residence: 1998 Township of Residence: Chapel Hill Zone of Residence: County Sex: Male Ethnic Background: white Community Activities/Organizational Memberships: I volunteer to help the county with its sustainability activities as well as serve on the OC Commission for the Environment.
