ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES

THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MET ON SATURDAY: December 15, 2018 at the
Hillsborough Commons, Hillsborough, North Carolina.
BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT: Tamara Dempsey-Tanner, Ann Wilkerson, and Pat
Garavaglia.
GUEST: None.
BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS ABSENT: Earl McKee and Susie Enoch.
STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager; Sharron Hinton,
Human Services Manager; and Crystal Mitchell, Human Services Manager.
I. Call to Order and Introductions
DSS Chair, Tamara Dempsey-Tanner, called the meeting to order at 12:15 pm.
II. Board Comments
None.
III. Public Comments
None.
IV. Agenda Changes
None.
V. Action Items
On a motion by Pat Garavaglia, the Board approved the minutes of November 19, 2018. Ann
Wilkerson seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent.
VI. Items for Discussion and/or Decision
1. DSS Board Annual Work Plan
Lindsey Shewmaker presented a draft of the DSS Board Annual Work Plan for comments and
approval.
On a motion by Pat Garavaglia, the Board approved the DSS Board Annual Work Plan for FY2018-
19. Tamara Dempsey-Tanner seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent.
2. Annual Staff Meeting Plan
The DSS Board agreed to move the January meeting to January 18, 2019 at 10:00 am. The staff
meeting will follow at 11:00 am and the agency luncheon will be held at 12:00 pm.

3. BOCC Presentation
Nancy Coston and Lindsey Shewmaker presented a draft agenda for the Board of County
Commissioners’ Meeting in February.
4. Director’s Report
Toys will be collected tonight at the UNC men’s basketball game verses Gonzaga. Toys will be
shared this year between Orange County Toys for Tots and the Toys for Tots organizations serving
counties in the eastern part of the state affected by the hurricanes.
VII. Announcements
Ann Wilkerson moved to adjourn the meeting at 1:05 pm. Pat Garavaglia seconded the motion. The motion
was carried without dissent.
