PURPOSE: To designate the week of February 18-24, 2001 as Severe Weather Awareness
Week.
BACKGROUND: Governor Michael F. Easley has proclaimed the week of February 18-
24,2001 as Severe Weather Awareness Week, with the theme "Be Safe at School, at Work
and at Home". A statewide tornado drill will be held on February 21, 2001. The drill consists
of practice watches and warnings being issued by the National Weather Service, and broadcast
to the public via radio and television stations. The purpose of the drill is to heighten citizen
awareness and allow their participation by practicing movements to safe areas in their homes or
offices. All county schools typically exercise their tornado plans during this activity.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact to Orange County.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the proclamation
designating the week of February 18-24,2001, as "Be Safe at School, at Work and at Home"
Severe Weather Awareness Week in Orange County, and encourage citizens to learn more
