While at University I served as a conversation partner and became friends with people of many different backgrounds. I have earned two BA’s, one at UNC Chapel Hill and one at Columbia and I have a MA in Russian Regional Studies. I very adept at research and looking at community issues. And being a research at UNC Chapel Hill my job involves program development and evaluation. However, I think it is my personal experiences of prejudice that is most relevant to the board. Having been the target of racial slurs and even threatened with physical violence, I know what it is like to feel isolated from the community. I believe I can bring a perspective to the Commission as an Asian-American and as a researcher. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: As I stated above, I am an adopted Asian-American. I grew up in Maine in a nearly all white community but I have lived in Russia, during a study abroad program, and I have lived in New York City for school and work. I now call Orange County and, more specifically, Hillsborough home. Sadly, I have experienced prejudice in all of these places. From being physically assaulted and threated with violence in my high school in Maine to having nasty remarks directed towards me and a friend at an upscale restaurant in Hillsborough. But I have also experienced the generosity and curiosity of people in these places as well. I am applying for a position on the Human Relations Commission not because of the negative things that have happened to me, but because of those positive human connections. I believe that reaching out and creating an atmosphere of acceptance is the way forward. I have not previously served on any Orange County boards. Human Relations Commission Background, education and experience relevant to this board: I currently practice corporate law but from 2003-2016 I served as an indigent defense attorney. Prior to that time I worked as a TASC (Treatment Alternatives to Street Crimes) case manager providing services to court-referred substance abusers. I also developed and presented prevention education programming to businesses, churches and schools addressing substance abuse, HIV/AIDS prevention, parenting, budgeting and job planning. As a former member of the New Hanover County Department of Social Services Board of Directors I had a firsthand glimpse of the ways in which marginalized communities could be assisted by proactive government programs or sadly, ways in which programs further demeaned them. My background, education and experience is relevant to this Board as I understand the issues facing marginalized communities and how those issues impact the greater community. Communities are comprised of diverse peoples who are all seeking to feel heard, accepted, relevant and respected. My career and experiences have made me attuned to this need and I believe this sensitivity and awareness would be essential to serving on this board. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: Though I’m a new Orange County resident, I am not new to the area. I have lived in Durham most of my life and worked in that community providing indigent defense and have also had the opportunity to practice in Orange County. I enjoy community building and have worked throughout my life to encourage, support and build coalitions. I believe in the work of the Human Relations Commission in breaking down barriers to grow community. People may come from diverse backgrounds but a shared commonality is the desire for fair treatment, the opportunity to succeed and to be treated with respect. In instances where community members are treated as less than or impeded in those goals, I would like to be an advocate to right that wrong. Through my work as a public defender I was involved in racial justice initiatives and have a keen interest in addressing youth criminal justice issues and the rights of formerly incarcerated people. Orange County has a diverse population and with that many needs. I believe serving in this capacity would enable me to use my skills and empathy to strengthen the community and keep Orange County a great place to live because from inclusion comes cohesion. A cohesive community is one that can thrive. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I have collaborated with individuals of many different backgrounds and I always find it fascinating to learn about other people and their life story. It pains me to hear when others are hurt physically or emotionally simply for being themselves. I always treat others with respect and compassion and want to help prevent and/or eliminate bias and discrimination in Orange 27 Page 2 of 2 Ryan Phillips Other Comments: This application was current on:2/25/2019 11:27:25 PM Date Printed:2/27/2019 Supplemental Questions: Boards/Commissions appointments: County, so that we can serve as a model for other communities around the state, nation, and world. Change in attitudes can be difficult to obtain, but I want to help promote dialogue to build common ground and remove divisions by focusing on the values that make us all human. I want to help ensure that fear, isolation, and intolerance have no place in our community and that in their void are only love, connection, and compassion to bring us together. Conflict of Interest: Commission for the Environment Background, education and experience relevant to this board: I initially started college as a meteorology major before switching to business administration, and learned in courses about how human behavior can affect the environment and climate. Before college, I was a member of the NC SAVE club at my school, which enacted recycling on campus and raised funds to protect the rainforest via the Rainforest Trust. For my Eagle Scout project, I collected over 13,000 books for reuse in schools by Books for Africa. About 1,500 books were not in great enough condition for donation, but were recycled with the help of Habitat for Humanity. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: I began working in Orange County in October and want to serve on this board to help ensure environmental protection of this beautiful area and to champion environmental stewardship in the Orange County community. I am highly interested in this topic and would work to research and create innovative environmental ideas and goals for the county to ensure a healthy environment for the current and future generations. Conflict of Interest: Arts Commission Background, education and experience relevant to this board: I obtained a minor in journalism while attending NC State and have experience in journalistic writing for the Flyers Focus newspaper at Sandhills Community College and video/radio presentation for the Broadcast Meteorology Club at NC State. Last year, while I lived in Charlotte, I served on the production crew for Elevation Church s uptown campus. I also have a personal interest in music and am teaching myself piano and guitar. In school, I played the violin and trumpet (marching band) performed in musicals, and sang in youth choir. Reasons for wanting to serve on this board: The arts are like the petals of a flower. STEM careers are important to making society run, just like the stem of a flower is important in helping it stand upright. The petals add beauty to a flower, just like the arts and culture add beauty to a community and society as a whole. The arts enrich the lives of so many people and are an important staple in providing a community with its own unique appeal. I want to serve on this board to help support the arts of Orange County through existing ideas and to introduce new strategies for continued growth.
