HomeMy WebLinkAboutAging Advisory Board Minutes 040919 Orange County Advisory Board on Aging MINUTES Tuesday, April 9, 2019 Passmore Center PRESENT: (Board Members) Heather Altman, Colin Austin, Peggy Cohn,James Harris, Richard White, and Michael Zuber. (Staff) Myra Austin, Mike Komives, Cherie Rosemond, Beverly Shuford, Janice Tyler, Annie Deaver, Shenae McPherson Board Members Absent: Mary Altpeter, Keith Cook, Vibeke Talley 1. Introductions and Announcements a. Colin's office has moved to Corporate Drive, off of Meadowlands Drive. b. With quorum present, the February 12, 2019 minutes were approved. 2. Approval of Minutes— March 12, 2019 a. Motion made and approved to accept the March minutes with one correction: Section 13.c., correct HIPPA to HIPAA. 3. Any other Agenda items a. None Director's Report 4. Staff Updates a. Interview team completed interviews for the VC 55+Volunteer Coordinator position and will be making an offer soon. 5. TJCOG-AAA Annual Monitoring visit— March 20 a. The Aging Transitions division was monitored on March 20 with positive results. A final report from TJCOG-AAA is forthcoming. 6. House Bill 335— Increase funding for HCCBG a. NC Association on Aging and the NC Coalition on Aging asking for$7 million, recurring funding, for senior center operations. Janice reported that it was a bi-partisan issue with a good chance of passing. Janice asked if the board would be willing to write a letter of support to the legislators. The board voted yes. Janice to draft the letter, Peggy will sign and send. 7. Older Americans Month Proclamation — May a. Janice will get the proclamation to the OC BOCC for approval at the May 2nd BOCC meeting. 8. Volunteer Connect 55+Volunteer Appreciation — May 10, Seymour Center, 4—6 p.m. a. Janice invited the board members and reminded everyone to mark their calendars. 9. Direct Care Worker Awards— May 9, Passmore Center, 4:30—6 p.m. a. This is the 5t" annual awards ceremony for direct care workers. Nominations continue to come in. Deadline to submit: April 15, 2019. New Business 10. Seymour Center Renovation Update a. Nearly 30 contractors attended the Pre-bid meeting on March 28. Bids may be submitted until April 30, 2 p.m. when bidding will close. b. First phase of the project is to straighten the road and build 55 parking spaces. 11. Board Vacancies a. Jenny Womack, Clinical Professor, UNC Division of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy; Senior Associate, UNC Partnerships in Aging Program, application and board recommendation letter have been submitted; appointment pending BOCC approval. b. Rachel Bearman, Executive Director, Chapel Hill —Carrboro Meals on Wheels, has applied for board membership. Board voted and approved recommending Rachel for membership. Janice will submit a letter of recommendation to the BOCC. c. Heather Altman and Vibeke Talley are up for reappointment, both agreed to serve another term. Janice will notify the BOCC. d. Peggy Cohn will rotate off in June. e. Janice explained that of the 12 board seats, 7 must be over age 60. As of June we will have 3 —over 60 "At Large" vacant positions, we will try to fill with individuals who would round out our county- wide representation. Janice asked that board members contact her if they know of anyone that they would like to recommend. 12. 2019-20 Budget a. Asking for$2k for interpreter services. 2017-22 Master Aging Plan 13.
