PURPOSE: To consider a petition by the Orange County Board of Education for abandonment
of SR 1222 in Hillsborough Township from the State-maintained Secondary Road System.
BACKGROUND: North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has submitted a
petition from the Orange County Board of Education to remove State Secondary Road 1222
from the State Maintenance Program. SR 1222, unnamed, is approximately 0.11 mile long, and
is located off the north side of New Grady Brown School Road (SR 1721) west of Orange Grove
Road (SR 1006). A new high school is proposed for that site. SR 1222 will become the
entrance to and part of a parking lot for the school (according to the preliminary site plan for the
high school).
NCDOT has investigated this request (see attached Secondary Road Abandonment Report)
and has submitted the petition to the Board of Commissioners for its review and approval. The
board must take an administrative action to approve the request to remove the right-of-way from
the State Maintenance Program in order for NCDOT to abandon maintenance of SR 1222.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no direct financial impact associated with this decision item.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Administration recommends that the Board approve the request
to abandon SR 1222 from the State Secondary Road Maintenance Program.
