.PURPOSE: To receive formal presentation of a 4,500 State grant to support an Orange
County Government "Buy Recycled" seminar for local and regional public sector staff and area
private companies.
BACKGROUND: In August 2000, the BOCC accepted a $4,500 State grant for conducting a
conference promoting the purchasing of materials with recycled content in order to strengthen
recycling markets and reduce environmental impacts through use of recycled products. In
December 2000, the Board reviewed and endorsed the general agenda for a seminar to be held
in February, 2001 that would use the grant funds to promote the benefits of buying recycled for
Town and County governments, school systems, and other public and private sector entities.
Staff from the State Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance will formally
present a plaque recognizing the grant award and will make brief comments regarding the
State's "Buy Recycled" efforts. At that time, County Solid Waste staff will formally announce the
date and agenda for the "Buy Recycled" Conference, scheduled for February 19, 2001 at the
Friday Center in Chapel Hill.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The County has contributed a required match of $500 to the $4,500
grant. The matching funds have already been incorporated into the current fiscal year budget.
There is no direct financial impact related to this presentation. The $4,500 grant has already
been received and been incorporated in the County's amended FY 2000-01 budget.
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board receive the $4,500 grant
award recognition.
