Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director
I. Tim called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
II. Delia moved, Marlon seconded to approve the November, 2018 minutes. Motion approved.
III. Following discussion, Fred moved, Doris seconded to approve Justin Haslett for membership
on the OCAC Advisory Board. Motion passed.
IV. Director's Report:
• The Arts Educator Professional Development Fund has received three applications,
all from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools.
• The joint grant application to Z Smith Reynolds (OCAC, Free Spirit Freedom,
Empowerment, Orange County Human Rights)was not approved. Katie reached out
to ZSR for feedback and learned that of the 90 applications received, 80%were from
the Triangle area. Ours was strong and opportunities may exist in the future.
• The big report, Enriching our Cultural Character will be issued by the end of January.
• The artists' holiday"Arty Party" was very well attended (approximately 75). The
presenters were excellent. Planning for the next event in April at Red Eye in
Hillsborough. Suggestions for presenters are welcome as are ideas for a name to
replace "Arty Party".
• The River Park stakeholders meeting concluded without a clear direction for the
future.
• The ArtSpace Working Group will meet on January 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the Chapel Hill
Library, Room A. Thanks to Fred for his work with this group.
• ArtsDay in Raleigh is coming up on March 26 &27. Katie has arranged for Tift
Merritt to perform on the 261". Lobbying takes place on the 271". Please attend.
We need good representation from OCAC.
• Katie has been appointed to Town of Chapel Hill Varsity Theater Task Force. There
will be ongoing negotiations between the Town and the owner of the theater.
• Katie is working with the Director of Humanities for the Public Good on a possible
symposium regarding on/off campus art collaborations.
• Katie may be working with an NAE grant to bring a series of performing artists to
Orange County in 2020/2021.
• Katie and Fred attended the inaugural meeting of the EJI lynching memorial project.
Fred spoke eloquently to a very attentive crowd.
V. Committee Reports:
• Fundraising Committee—Dan and Chris are working on preliminary structure for a
501(c)3.
• Calvin Street Tree—Anita has done a great job wrangling this project. Wood has been
milled and will be kiln dried for about a year. RFQ going out this week. Three finalists
will be selected. Project estimated to be finished in May 2020.
VI. Liaison Reports:
Visitor's Bureau—Tim
o No meeting in December.
Hillsborough Arts Council—Doris
o The Gift Shop enjoyed record sales in November& December.
o The HAC facility is closed for the month of January while some maintenance and
cosmetic improvements are being done.
o The Executive Committee has started our strategic planning process. We have a
facilitator that has worked with HAC for several years and knows our
organization well. We will be meeting monthly on Sunday afternoons for the
next several months.
o The Solstice Lantern Walk was a huge success despite having to reschedule the
event due to rain. An estimated 4,000 people participated.
Orange County Artists Guild—Katie for Anita
o The Guild is considering significantly increasing advertising and marketing for
the 2019 Tour.
Carrboro Arts Committee—Dan
o A search for the Carrboro poet laureate is underway.
The Arts Center—Dan
o Dan distributed copies of the Art School Winter classes.
o There is an exhibit of neon art in the gallery this month.
o There will be a press release soon announcing that The Art Center is no longer a
part of the 203 Greensboro project.
o Opening a search for Arts Education Coordinator.
o TAC Gala scheduled for April 27th 6:00 at the UNC Botanical Center.
UNC Student Liaison—Evan
o Spectrum Concert on February 2nd
o Stone Center—Black River exhibit. Charles Williams from Greensboro will speak
on January 22
o Carolina Performing Arts starts their new season.
o Musical Empowerment's Spring Recital will a on April 13 at 7:00
