Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director
I. Tim called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
II. Approval of the September, 2018 minutes was deferred to November due to a lack of a
quorum.
III. UNC Student Liaison board position approved by the Board of Commissioners on September
22, 2018. Evan Linnet is disappointed he is unable to attend his first meeting due to a
rescheduled performance postponed by Hurricane Michael.
IV. Director’s Report
• Plans for Paint it Orange are down to the wire. We have 35 artists registered as of today
and anticipate more who will register at the last minute. We did not have enough
people register for the workshop to make it feasible. We will try again next year. There
will be an artist meet-and-greet at King Street Bar Friday night from 6:00 to 7:30. Board
members are asked to attend to represent OCAC. Awards reception is Sunday at C3
Hillsborough from 6:00 to 8:00. Please attend.
• The Chamber trip to Lawrence, Kansas was worth the expense. Eighty people attended
and the trip provided lots of opportunities to make good connections with community
leaders. The #1 take-away, according to the majority of those participating, was a desire
to have more emphasis on the arts in our community.
• Katie met with Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools representative regarding our arts
educator initiative. It was suggested that we not restrict use of the money to paying for
substitute teachers but also include program fees, travel expenses, etc. Suggested
increasing the cap to $250. No vote due to lack of a quorum.
• Katie has sent a letter of intent to Z Smith Reynolds Foundation proposing a partnership
with Hillsborough Arts Council’s Free Spirit Freedom, the Empowerment Project and
Orange County Department of Human Services to explore the potential for African-
American public art.
• Katie is preparing a proposal to the County regarding OCAC’s potential leadership in the
2019 LocalFest event.
• Katie has completed the white paper detailing a vision for a community arts center. This
has been reviewed by the Arts Leadership group. Katie will incorporate their
suggestions and send to OCAC board for review and comment.
• Katie will be meeting with representatives of the Hillsborough Arts Council about a call
to artists to create a public art piece from the Red Oak “Treasure Tree” that was felled
by Hurricane Florence.
V. Committee Reports:
• Events Committee – Doris & Katie
• The Events Committee discussed implementing quarterly artist Meet-&-Greet
events. Plans for the first one at Vecino in Carrboro in November are underway.
• Events Committee will talk with the Chapel Hill Downtown Partnership to
explore the possibility of matching retail/commercial sites with artists as an
opportunity to display their work.
• We have reached out to Duke’s Director of Programming to explore the
possibility of an Orange County Literary Festival.
• Katie will explore further the possibility of a public art “Art Prize” event similar
to that held in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The public votes on favorite public art
pieces; awards are given.
• Chris has suggested an informal dinner at his home for community arts
supporters and leaders as an opportunity to build relationships and foster
candid and creative discussion.
• Literary Arts Committee – Ashley
• Meeting with high school teachers about expanding the student writing
competition previously sponsored by Chris Kubica.
• Exploring possibility of a kid friendly Literary Walk in Hillsborough. We will be
speaking with the Hillsborough Arts Council about a potential partnership with
them as well as Purple Crow bookstore and local writers.
• Exploring the possibility of an Orange County writer’s podcast or blog.
• Exploring the possibility of producing high-quality broadsides incorporating
visual arts and the written word.
• Fundraising Committee – to be rescheduled. Cancelled due to Hurricane Michael
• ArtSpace Work Group – to be rescheduled. Cancelled due to Hurricane Michael
VI. Liaison Reports:
Visitor’s Bureau – Tim
o Visitor’s Bureau has hired a PR firm to lead a project to reconsider their brand.
This is driven, in part, by the relocation of UNC’s Visitor’s Bureau to Franklin
Street.
Hillsborough Arts Council – Doris
o Executive Director, Torey Mishoe started today.
o Handmade Parade was a big success. Many thanks and kudos to Tinka and
OCAC. HAC solicited donations and has received some contributions through
Pay Pal.
o Will be holding a follow-up to our January, 2018 planning meeting on Sunday,
November 4th to review progress on goals set and future direction.

o Open Studio Tour coming up November 3-4 and 10-11th
