ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION
August 13, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.

Board Members present: Tim Hoke, Chair; Doris Friend, Secretary; Dan Mayer, Marlon Torres, Delia
Keefe, Linda Williamson, Marcela Slade, Fred Joiner, Tinka Jordy
Board Members absent: Helen Jones, Ashley Nissler, Chris Kubica, Vice Chair, Anita Mills, Bronwyn
Merritt, Tarish Pipkins
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director; Molly Weybright, Intern
Guest: Evan Linnet
I. Tim called the meeting to order at 6:30 p.m.
II. Introductions of Molly Weybright and Evan Linnet
III. Linda moved, Marlon seconded to approve the July 14th minutes. Motion passed.
IV. Katie discussed the creation of a UNC Student Liaison potion on our Board. The term of the
position will be one year. The current UNC Liaison will be responsible for recommending
his/her replacement from the UNC senior student body. Dan moved and Marcela seconded
the proposal of adding the liaison position pending approval by the BOCC on September 4th.
If approved, Evan Linnet will serve in this position. Motion passed.
V. Director’s Report
• Board bios are on the website. If you have not submitted a photo, please do so.
• Grantee checks will be presented at the BOCC meeting on September 4th at 7:00 at the
Whitted Building. Board members are encouraged to attend to congratulate our
grantees.
• Katie will be scheduling sub-committee meetings this week. If you need to change your
assignment, please contact Katie.
• Planning for the Paint it Orange plein air event is underway. Dates are October 19-21.
Board members are encouraged to think of potential sponsors among your family,
friends and network. Artists’ registration is live on the website this week.
• LocalFest is coming up on September 29th. Planning is going well. OCAC has received 26
artist applications as of this date. Board members with a visual arts expertise are asked
to serve as jurors.
• Katie is working with Carrboro and Chapel Hill to respond to a Z. Smith Reynolds grant
opportunity for a public arts placemaking project.
• Katie continues to work with Orange County Economic Development Director, Steve
Brantley, to develop a proposal for a Creative Business Challenge.
• Katie has meet with Carmen Elliott, several artists and representatives from C3 and Eno
Mill about possible studio space solutions.
• Katie has been appointed to Ackland Museum’s Community Engagement committee.
• Katie has been asked to serve on the planning committee for UNC ArtsDay 2019.
VI. Katie opened a discussion about possible refinements to our grants process for FY 19-20.
Several suggestions were put forward and it was agreed to continue this discussion next
meeting. Katie will draft a proposal.
VII. Fred Joiner shared his experience of attending the National Memorial for Peace and Justice
museum in Montgomery, AL. There are many moving and meaningful public art
opportunities associated with the museum. These will be pursued with a coalition of
Orange County religious leaders, community members and OCAC.
VIII. Liaison Reports
o Tim – Visitors Bureau
No report from the Visitor’s Bureau.
o Doris - Hillsborough Arts Council
o Handmade Parade October 14; rain date October 21
o Paint it Orange October 19 – 21. Awards reception 6:00 – 8:00 p.m.
on the 21st at the new C3 facility
o Last Friday October 26th open house at C3 to view Paint it Orange
pieces
o River Park Concert October 27 all day – FREE!
o Electing new directors in September. Doris and David Hayes will
serve as co-chairs, Bill Whitmore Vice Chair, Merle Williams
Treasurer and Trena Jones Secretary
o Dan – Carrboro / The Arts Center
o Carrboro will host “Wild and Scenic” film festival at the Community
Center on September 6th at 6:30 p.m.
o Dan distributed copies of the Fall 2018 ArtSchool brochure
o After school program is now in partnership with OCAC. Discussions
about the future coming up.
o “Elf Market” during the holiday season will provide opportunities for
artists to display and sell original and reproduced art work.
o Dates for the Racial Equity Institute workshop have been set for
November 10-11 and 17. Please mark your calendar.
