Board Members present: Chris Kubica, Vice Chair; Doris Friend, Secretary; Dan Mayer, Ashley Nissler,
Marcela Slade, Marlon Torres, Linda Williamson, Anita Mills, Bronwyn Merritt , Fred Joiner, Tinka Jordy,
Helen Jones
Board Members absent: Tim Hoke, Delia Keefe, Tarish Pipkins
Staff Present: Katie Murray, Executive Director
I. Chris called the meeting to order at 6:33.
II. Amy moved, Linda seconded to approve the February April 9th minutes. Motion passed.
III. Director’s Report
• Katie asked all board members to submit a short personal bio and photo for our
website. Deadline: May 31st.
• Katie asked for volunteers to introduce “Arts Moment” presenters at the Board of
Commissioners meetings. A sign-up sheet was circulated and several members
signed up.
• Local Fest will be held on September 29th. Artists’ registration fees will go to OCAC.
• Our intern, Georgia Brenner, is leaving for grad school in June. Katie will recruit a
new intern which she will share with the Local Fest planner.
• Arts Day in Raleigh on May 23 & 24. Katie and others will be meeting with our state
legislators. This year’s legislative goal is $1 per citizen for the Arts. This would mean
a 68% increase for Orange County.
• Katie will meet with Steve Brantley, Chapel Hill Economic Development Director, to
discuss a small business grant for creative endeavors.
• Katie has been asked to serve on the Ackland Art Museum Outreach Task Force.
• Orange County participation in the 4th Annual Congressional District Art Competition
was very low (2 submissions) again this year. We will reconsider this next year.
• Katie held three grant training sessions.
• Katie is participating in on-going conversations with the Town of Chapel Hill
regarding the possible purchase of the Varsity Theater and renovation for a
performance art space.
• Katie presented State of the Arts report to nine agencies/organizations.
IV. Discussion of UNC Capstone Project Findings
• Katie presented a summary of the recommendations from the report.
Opportunities for tax increases from local governments are limited. More
opportunities may be available in public-private partnerships. This may require a
different configuration of the OCAC’s structure.
V. Discussion of Future Initiatives for FY 18-19
• Katie presented four initiatives for exploration:
o Services for Arts Providers
o Promotion
o Funding
o Advocacy
• From this, committees were formed with each board member agreeing to serve on
at least one committee.
VI. Liaison Reports
o Katie (for Tim Hoke)
The Chapel Hill Visitors Bureau continues to discuss the economic impact of
Air BnBs.
o Doris
The Hillsborough Arts Council continues to work on implementation of
various strategic plan goals.
o Dan
o The Art Center’s Annual Gala was very successful. Thanks to fellow
board members who attended.
o TAC’s Summer Program is in place. Dan distributed program brochure.
o Arts Center will partner with Odyssey Theater to reinstate the 10 x 10
production. Performances will be held at TAC and in Cary.
o The Women’s Playwrights Festival is scheduled for August. This a
Triangle-wide event.
o The Carrboro Arts Committee has agreed to implement their recently
approved public art policy to resolve issues surrounding painting of the
crosswalks at the Farmer’s Market and Weaver Street Grocery.
o Anita
o Katie presented the State of the Arts to the Orange County Artists’ Guild
Member meeting. It was very well received.
o OCAG is hosting “Spring Sublime” pop-up show at FRANK’s Outreach
Gallery at University Place.
