HomeMy WebLinkAboutNursing Home CAC minutes 0904181 Orange County Nursing Home Community Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes, September 4, 2018 5:30pm, Seymour Center, Chapel Hill, NC CALL TO ORDER by Vibeke Talley, Chair • Members Present: Martha Bell, Stephanie Boswell, Carol Kelly, Annie Deaver (Orange County Department on Aging), Jackie Podger, Jerry Ann Gregory, Vibeke Talley (Chair), Molly Stein, Stephanie Miller, Jennifer Link (Ombudsman Office) • Members Excused: Karen Macklin, Susie Deter • Resignation: Jerry Schreiber submitted his resignation. We thank him for his service to the residents in nursing homes of Orange County OLD BUSINESS; • Discussion/Approval July 10, 2018 Minutes: Reviewed and approved as written. NEW BUSINESS • Site Visit Reports o Brookshire: Accepted with change. o Carolina Point: Accepted as written. Discussed some of the more significant findings, including staff attention and attitude towards to residents, call light response, delay of pain medication due to slow call light answering. Jennifer Link reported that Autumn Cox, our designated Ombudsman, is addressing these concerns with the facility. o Carol Woods: Accepted with change. • Ombudsman’s Report: Jennifer Link provided the following information: o Autumn Cox has returned from maternity leave and will rejoin the group at the November 2018 meeting. Committee members thanked Jennifer Link for her assistance and presence during Autumn’s absence. o Residents Rights month. One member brought up that it is Resident Rights Month in October and asked about plans for activities or advertising. No activities or advertising known as yet. This prompted a brief discussion about resident rights: a committee member had recently completed training to become a CNA and noted that the topic was not included in any part of the course. Members were concerned particularly with recent site visit report findings and the importance of knowledge about residents rights among facility staff. The committee members will continue to address residents rights when visiting facilities. • Department on Aging Report (Annie Deaver): o The department is revamping with the hiring of a DSS social worker. o Two new publications are in development to spread information about services available at the county’s senior centers. Annie will update us on their progress and provide final copies when ready for distribution. (Bravo to our DOA! All committee members were very impressed with the efforts). ▪ Connect More! At Seymour is a new program aimed at helping individuals needing social support to be able to participate in activities at the Seymour Center. This small group (initially 5-6 members) is facilitated by Lisa Meinert, an Aging Transitions team member and respite coordinator, 2 ▪ One-Stop-Shop Aging in Place Supports (a trifold pamphlet) outlines free services available at the Orange County Senior Centers for our county’s older adults. Help Line information is printed in English, Chinese and Spanish languages. • Thanks to Jackie Podger: Via E-Mail Jackie, forwarded information to committee members from the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA about a new program. “Moving for Better Balance” Fall Session will be 100% grant funded available for those meeting lower income requirements. Further information can be obtained from the local YMCA. • Reminders o Next Meeting: November 6, 2018 o 4th Quarterly ActivityReports Due: October 2018 o Quarterly Site Visit Reports are due when visits are complete.
