ANIMAL SERVICES ADVISORY BOARD MEETING

Animal Services News
Clear The Shelters (August 18, 2018)
o Very successful with a total of 48 same-day adoptions for us
o WRAL reported 1,828 adoptions locally and over 98,000 nationwide!
Hurricane Florence
o Orange County Opened 2 co-location shelters at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill and CW
Stanford in Hillsborough
Smith operated Wednesday, 9/12 – Sunday, 9/16
Stanford operated Wednesday, 9/12 – Saturday, 9/15
Both locations had staff and volunteers from Animal Services there 24/7 in teams of 1-2
Mostly dogs present, but several rabbits and a few cats as well
o Orange County opened another co-location shelter on Monday, 9/17 at Hillsborough Commons
No pets there yet
Animal Services staffed it for the first 24 hours
We are now on-call for assistance if and when animals arrive
o Animal Services also had staff on site at the AS Center for several days during the storm to care
for the animals in our own custody
o We are exploring ways in which we can make resources available to the state-run shelter at
UNC’s Friday Center
Upcoming Events
o The next Low-Cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic is on Thursday, 9/27, at the Farmer’s Market on
Margaret Lane in Hillsborough from 5pm – 7pm.
The 9/29 clinic has been cancelled and will be rescheduled as soon as possible.
It was cancelled due to conflicts in scheduling with LocalFest, which still needs
volunteers. Contact Molly Weybright (mweybright@orangecountync.gov) with any
volunteering questions or offers for LocalFest!
o Spay/Neuter Day: October 17th (sign up by October 3rd)
o October is Dog Adoption Month!
Reduced adoption fees for all dogs and puppies
Miscellaneous:
Thanks to a generous donation, we now have warming blankets for our surgery animals
Currently filling the 3 final staffing vacancies
Trees near the easement are staying (power lines will be buried along that stretch)
