Staff interactions in Memory Care notable and positive: conversation, snacks, encouraging resident interactions. 6. One resident in Memory Care in a chair restraint. Previously observed and explained by staff. 2. Did residents say they receive assistance with personal care activities? Did residents describe their living environment as homelike? Yes 12. The back garden and patio is the designated smoking area. However, several residents were under the eave in the front smoking. Although there was a NO SMOKING sign, a receptacle for discarded cigarettes was present. 9. Did you notice unpleasant odors? No 10. Did you see items that could cause harm or be hazardous? No 10a. N/A Two plastic waste cans showed melted areas where cigarettes had been extinguished. A resident shared that despite her complaints, smoking in both areas occurs so there is no place for non-smokers to gather outside. She also shared that the problem will not improve as management also uses the front for their smoke breaks. 13. Limited use of staff name tags. Discuss items from “Areas of Concern” Section as well as any changes observed during the visit. Give summary of visit with Administrator or SIC. Does the facility have needs that the committee or community could help address? Two committee members met with residents during this visit, while another met with the Resident Care Coordinator and two representatives from the Orange Co. Department on Aging. The purpose of this meeting was to gauge the interest of the facility in participating in DoA offered educational programming, namely the Falls Prevention and/or Brain Health Academy. The facility staff expressed considerable interested and indicated that they would expect a good turnout of residents for these six-week programs. DoA reps have followed up with the administrator and are aiming for spring to initiate one of the Academies. Pertinent to the visit itself, the committee observed continued progress observed in Memory Care re: staff interactions with residents. Overall, staff were cordial and visible. The facility was clean and pleasantly decorated for Valentine’s Day. Residents engaging with each other and with CAC visitors about the birthday party that just concluded, including a celebration in Memory Care. Residents waiting in foyer were anticipating the evening meal.
