BACKGROUND: The Orange County Arts Commission (OCAC) awards grants to local artists, schools and nonprofit organizations from funds received from the state and Orange County government for this purpose. These funds are distributed for arts projects and programs in all arts disciplines. Comparisons between this year's cycle and past years are noted in the chart below. TOTALS FY16 -17 (two cycles) FY17 -18 (one cycle) Total grants awarded 48, or 76/0 of requests 33, or 60% of requests Total applications received 63 55 Total unique applicants 52 48 Total first -time applicants 13, or 25% of applicants 18, or 38% of applicants Total first -time applicants awarded 7, or 13% of applicants 8, or 17% of applicants FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funds totaling $61,394 are being awarded to fourteen artists, twelve nonprofit organizations, and nine schools for the 2018 -19 grants cycle. Of those funds, $40,594 is from the North Carolina Arts Council Grassroots Arts Program, and the remaining $28,800 is from Orange County. The remaining $8,000 of grant funding was used for OCAC partnership programs including Arts in Education partnership with The ArtsCenter ($5,000); the Piedmont Laureate Program with the Durham Arts Council, Raleigh Arts Commission, and United Arts of Raleigh/Wake County ($1,500); and the Emerging Artist Grant Program with Durham Arts Council ($1,500). SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: The following Orange County Social Justice Goal is applicable to this item: �i • GOAL: FOSTER A COMMUNITY CULTURE THAT REJECTS OPPRESSION AND INEQUITY The fair treatment and meaningful involvement of all people regardless of race or color; religious or philosophical beliefs; sex; gender or sexual orientation; national origin or ethnic background; age; military service; disability; and familial, residential or economic status. The impact for traditionally under - served populations and geographic location is a part of the grant evaluation criteria across all of the Commission's grant categories. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board acknowledge the local recipients of these awards during the September 4, 2018 meeting with the presentation of checks by the Board Chair.
