CAMERON STREET BARRY JACOBS sea HILLSBOROUGH, N.C. 27278 *rt h August 4, 2000 Dear HSAC Forum Participants: The Orange County Board of Commissioners and the Orange County Human Services Advisory Commission (HSAC) invite you to participate in the 11th Annual Human Services Advisory Forum on Wednesday, September 13, 2000, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The forum will be held at the Friday Center, Laurel Hill Parkway, on the UNC Campus. The registration fee of $10.00 includes lunch provided by the Friday Center. The theme for this year's forum is, "Mental Health: It Affects All Ages ". Due to the importance of mental health for livelihood and happiness and the significant health, economic, and social impact of the mental health system, our current mental health system is being assessed on all levels. As a result, there is now a timely opportunity for improvement in Orange County. Mental health includes a broad range of illnesses that can affect anyone - children, adolescents, adults, and senior citizens. Not only does it affect the individual's life, but also impacts the lives of family members and friends. The Forum will provide community agencies and individuals with an opportunity to discuss the needs of persons with mental illness. We will brainstorm on ways agencies can work to eliminate the gaps in services. Questions for discussion include: • What are the issues surrounding the mental health system? • What are the needs of persons with mental illness? • What are the available resources? • What-are the gaps in service delivery? • How do we better inform the public about existing services? • How can government and non profits partner to improve access to services and share resources for mental health? An agenda for the forum is enclosed; the day will begin with the keynote address presented by Ralph Campbell, Jr., State Auditor and Representative Verla Insko, chair of the NC Mental Health Study Commission. The Auditor's Office has recently completed an audit of the mental health system in North Carolina and Representative Insko is - chairing the legislative committee charged with assessing the mental health system. A panel discussion will follow identifying the needs of persons with mental illness. The day will culminate in small group discussions to strategize about service delivery for mental health patients and their families.
