HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes 101899/nn I T t HUMAN SERVICES ADVISORY COMMISSION OL MINUTES ,4N October 18, 1999 Page 1 of 2 2 3 The regularly - scheduled meeting of the Human Services Advisory Commission was held 4 on Monday, October 18, 1999 at 5:30 p.m. at the Government Services Center, 200 S. 5 Cameron Street, Hillsborough, N.C. 6 7 MEMBERS PRESENT: Louise Echols, Co- chair; Natalie Ammarell; Christine Barfield; 8 Marvin Block; Dee Gamble; Mel Hurston; Lynette Jeffries; Deborah Kinert; Herschel 9 Slater; Christine Trask; Rosetta Wash; Rebecca Young. 10 11 MEMBERS ABSENT: Judy Cox, Co- Chair; Barry Jacobs; Geno Pichette; Sue Russell; 12 Donald David Thompson, Jr. 13 14 STAFF PRESENT: Albert Kittrell, Assistant County Manager; Nancy Martin, Assistant to 15 the Clerk. 16 17 WELCOME AND MEMBER UPDATE The members introduced themselves and gave 18 updates on their departments' activities. Three recently- appointed members were 19 present and introduced themselves: Rebecca Young, at- large; Cathleen Trask, 20 representing Communities -In- Schools; and Rosetta Wash, at- large. Ms. Young 21 explained that her background is in Public Health. Ms. Wash is the Director of the 22 Interfaith Council Community House. Ms. Young is a Technical Training Advisor for the 23 Department of Maternal and Child Health, School of Public Health, at UNC- Chapel Hill. 24 25 MINUTES - The minutes of August 16, 1999, were approved by consensus as 26 corrected. 27 28 1999 FORUM — RECAP 29 Albert Kittrell spoke about the 1999 Human Services Forum, entitled "Building 30 'Confianza': Developing Trust and Improving Access to Service for the Hispanic /Latino 31 Community in Orange County." The Forum was held at the Friday Center, on 32 September 15, 1999. There were 130 participants (out of 200 registrants) despite rainy 33 weather and the approach of a major hurricane. He presented the 1999 Forum draft 34 report and the participants' comment forms, which the members reviewed and 35 discussed. 36 37 HISPANIC CENTER 38 Mr. Kittrell said that the results of the 1999 Forum encouraged the Board of County 39 Commissioners to consider the idea of a Hispanic Center to be developed in Chapel Hill. 40 41 RECOMMENDATION TO THE BOCC 42 A recommendation /annual report usually is developed by the HSAC from the results of 43 the Forum. This recommendation would be presented to the Board of County 44 Commissioners, Mr. Kittrell said. Mr. Kittrell will invite Ms. Annette Moore, Director of Orange County Human Rights and Relations Department, to speak on this topic at the next meeting. THANK YOU LETTERS Thank you letters to the Forum speakers had already been sent on behalf of the Human Services Advisory Commission by Mr. Kittrell's office. It was also decided, by consensus, that Louise Echols will send thank you letters to Albert Kittrell's and Annette Moore's staffs.
