PURPOSE: To recognize Armacell, LLC for outstanding corporate citizenship for its
environmental stewardship in reducing waste material by approximately 5 million pounds per
year, a reduction from 20 percent of total output to 2 percent of total output.
BACKGROUND: Armacell relocated its North American corporate headquarters from
Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Mebane and Orange County in 2000, As part of the relocation, the
company undertook a major expansion and upgrading of its Mebane plant, now a 250,000
square-foot warehouse and distribution center, The company, a global market leader in foam
technology, operates 18 facilities employing 2,100 people in 11 countries, including 240 people
in Orange County.
Armacell invented Armaflex®tube and sheet insulation used in mechanical insulation, air
conditioning and refrigeration, duct work, and other commercial and residential applications that
require prevention of heat loss or gain, and protection against condensation. Armacell also
manufactures polyethylene tube insulation and two other technical foams.
Beginning in 1997, Armacell was no longer able to send porous foam to the Orange Regional
Landfill due to problems with foam compaction, Since then, Armacell has standardized its
manufacturing processes and established uniform procedures to reduce waste. These
procedures have reduced waste from 20 percent of total cutput to 2 percent of total output, a
five million pound per year reduction. The remaining waste is used by another North Carolina
company as part of its production process,
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the attached
resolution commending Armacell, LLC North America far its exemplary corporate citizenship and
authorize the Chair to sign the resclution

WHEREAS, Armacell is a global leader in rubber and plastic foam technology, and
WHEREAS, the company relocated its North American corporate headquarters from Lancaster,
Pennsylvania to Mebane and Orange County in 2000, and
WHEREAS, Armacell has expanded its Orange County facility into a 250,000 square foot
warehouse and distribution center. and
WHEREAS, Armacell employs over 240 employees in its Orange County operations, and
WHEREAS, the company's 18 facilities employ 2,100 people in 11 countries, and
WHEREAS, the company has shown exemplary environmental stewardship by reducing foam
waste material at the Mebane facility by five millions pounds per year; reducing waste from
approximately 20 percent of total output to 2 percent of total output, and
WHEREAS, the remaining waste is given to another North Carolina company to assist in their
manufacturing process;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners
formally commends Armacell, LLC North America for serving as a model corporate citizen of
Orange County.
