1. August Stats
a. The (adjusted) live release rate was 93 percent
b. Positive outcomes included:
i. 251 adoptions (74 percent)
ii. 23 reclaims (7 percent)
iii. 15 transfers (4 percent)
c. Two hundred and eighty-eight (288) animals were admitted
d. In total, 586 animals were sheltered
i. Cats accounted for 38 of these animals
e. Sixty-three (63) animals were adopted as part of Clear the Shelters
f. Two hundred and fifty-one adoptions is a new monthly record
2. Working (farm) Cat Initiative
a. Redesign as a result of communication with Ag Preservation Board
i. Not a single day
ii. Coordinated by Animal Services staff like a voucher program
iii. Traps and trap instructions provided
iv. Resource development for “trappers” and “transporters”
b. Outreach to farmers and other rural residents
i. Flyer in the works
ii. Identifying outreach routes and constituencies

b. Spay Neuter Assistant Program-NC Partnership
i. Ongoing discussions with Laureen Bartfield, DVM, Director SNAP-NC about
growing our partnership
1. More crossover in outreach and information
ii. Likelihood of adding more Spay Neuter Day Events
1. Recent turnout indicates we have a successful “formula”
2. May increase them from 4 to 6 or 4 to 8
iii. Longer term possibilities
1. Addition of a third mobile unit to SNAP-NC
2. Potential need by OCAS of more sterilization capacity.
4. Hurricane Season Preparations
a. Created a small animal sheltering team of five (5) but so far it has not been deployed
b. The team and Companion Animal Mobile Equipment Trailer (CAMET) were both listed as
available assets through the Emergency Management Assistant Compact (EMAC)
c. A pet colocation team for the opening of a mass shelter was also put on standby until
Irma changed her course
d. Resources including capacity to shelter relocated animals were included in an inventory
of North Carolina resources prepared by the North Carolina Animal Federation for the
NC Department of Agriculture’s Small Animal Recovery Team as well as national animal
organizations
e. With Maria still a threat, any or all of the above could be reset at any time.
f. “Plan for the worst; hope for the best.”
5. Upcoming Events
a. Low-cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinics:
Thursday, 9/28, Farmer’s Market on Margaret Lane in Hillsborough, 5pm – 7pm
Saturday, 9/30, at Animal Services, 9am – 12pm
b. “2 for 1 Cat Adoption Special” until October 31, adopt any two (2) cats and get the 2nd
cat for free.
