1. July Shelter Stats
a. The (adjusted) live release rate was 93 percent
b. Positive outcomes included:
i. 192 adoptions (76 percent)
ii. 31 reclaims (12 percent)
iii. 12 transfers (5 percent)
c. Two hundred and fifty four (254) animals were admitted
d. In total, 560 animals were sheltered
i. Cats accounted for 191 of these animals
2. Staffing Updates
a. Two vacancies remain:
i. One Animal Control Officer
ii. An Administrative Assistant
b. We are also in the process of hiring a seasonal Animal Care Technician
c. Recent hires include:
i. Two Animal Control Officers
ii. One Animal Care Technician
iii. An Assistant Program Coordinator
d. Much training is underway and the training process for new staff will continue into for
the foreseeable future.
3. Program Developments
a. Community Spay Neuter Program
i. Received a $16,500 award from the Margaret T. Petrie Spaying and Neutering
Foundation.
ii. Eligibility will be broadened to include residents with household incomes up to
400 percent of the federal poverty level.
iii. Efforts are underway to launch the broadened the broadened program
b. Beyond Fences
i. Beyond Fences (formerly the Coalition to Unchain Dogs) is unable to accept new
clients in Orange County because of their human resource constraints
ii. They are continuing to serve existing clients in Orange County
iii. They have not ruled out restoring services to new clients but that is far from
certain.
c. Animal Identification
i. Friends of Orange County Animal Services (FOCAS) donated $2,000 to offset the
cost of making microchips part of the adoption package and fee

4. Miscellaneous
a. Facility Maintenance and Improvements
i. A facility generator will be installed by the end of the year
1. It is expected to run the entire facility in the event of a power outage
2. Siting options are under consideration
ii. The public restroom conversion has been completed
iii. A section of sewer line needs to be replaced in the coming months
1. It is about 30 feet and it was discovered during the restroom project
2. It will require removal of concrete floor and 4 feet of excavation in a
rear corridor
3. Operational disruptions will be minimized and the project is expected to
take 2 to 4 weeks.
b. Panleukopenia
i. In the month of August we have had two confirmed cases
ii. Our veterinary health care team has developed a plan to contain and uproot the
virus including
1. Isolation of all animals that may have been exposed
2. Use of smocks and booties in these high risk areas
3. Thorough disinfection of potentially affected areas
4. Exhaustive feline vaccination regimen
iii. Public disclosure is taking the form of notices in select areas of the Animal
Services Center and a handout in our adoption package for cats.
5. Upcoming Events
a. Clear the Shelters, 10 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturday, August 19
b. Low-cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinic, 3-5 pm, Thursday, August 17,
Orange County Animal Services
c. Back to School Adoption Special , August 1-31 (Dogs and puppies, $65 and $70; cats and
kittens, $55 and 60)
d. Spay Neuter Event (in conjunction with SNAP-NC), August 23, 2017
