General Public Comments on items not on the agenda: None
ASAB Affairs
(A) Reappointments for members whose terms are expiring will be renewed by the Board of County
Commissioners after recess. Members up for reappointment will continue as members in good
standing pending formal reappointment.
Old/New Business
(A) Animal Services Update
• There have been only 4 cases of confirmed rabies this year
• The recent low-cost rabies clinic brought out 125 pet owners (totaling 474 total year-to-
date), and eight more clinics are scheduled for the year
• The Animal Services budget was approved by the BOCC, including reduced and flexible
fees
• Unified Animal Ordinance Update: still under consideration by the Carrboro Board of
Aldermen; it’s expected to be voted on in early September
• The Dog Play/Exercise Area construction will be underway shortly
• Friends of OCAS donated money for billboards and banners for free-roaming cat
awareness
• Community Partnerships:
i. AnimalKind: They will help explore why the number of vouchers for low-cost
spay/neuter redeemed has fallen
ii. Rogers Road Neighborhood Association: Mr. Marotto met with members to talk
about how OCAS can improve outreach to area residents

(B) Research Requests
• In light of recent request to participate in veterinary research regarding a common
illness in sheltered kittens for which OCAS had no prior protocol and therefore declined,
the ASAB discussed the merits of creating a protocol for potential future opportunities
to contribute to research aiding animal welfare that would involve transfer of biological
samples.
• Based on the discussion, a subcommittee was formed to consider and draft a list of
criteria for reviewing such projects. Chair appointed the following members to the
subcommittee: Caroline Green, Maureane Hoffman, Susan Elmore and Dewana
Anderson

(A) June is Cat Adoption Month (reduced cat adoption fees)
(B) Microchip & Low-cost Rabies Vaccination Clinic, Saturday June 27, 2015
