HIGHLIGHTS
• Year to date there have been 4 laboratory confirmed rabies cases— 3 raccoons and 1 bat.
• An article about coyote incident reports from 2014 appeared in the News of Orange and it is
expected to appear in the Chapel Hill News as well.
o A map of incidents was created and posted on our coyote webpage (attached).
o Highlights include a large number of reports in the towns; limited hazing; and lost
cats, among other animals
• Animal Services staff has been attending Zone 4 Community Partner Meetings for the Orange
County Family Success Alliance.
UNIFIED ANIMAL ORDINANCE
• Approved by the Chapel Hill Town Council on April 13, 2015.
• Discussed by the Carrboro Board of Alderman at its March 27, 2015, meeting.
• County staff will be talking with Carrboro staff about the items raised in discussion in the
coming weeks.
• Carrboro and County staff will be working together to return the ordinance to the Board of
Alderman as a decision item in the near future.
STAFFING & STAFF TRAINING
• Interviews are now being conducted to hire a new Veterinary Health Care Manager.
• There is one open Animal Care Technician position and it is being re-advertised.
• The selection process for 2 vacant Animal Control Officer positions is coming to a close.
• Two Animal Control Officers will be attending the National Animal Control and Humane
Officer Training (Module A Curriculum), May 5-8, Kannapolis, North Carolina.
• Animal Services staff received comprehensive safety training on April 1, 2015.
UPCOMING EVENTS
• Animal Services Volunteer Social, Animal Services Center, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April
16, 2015
• Animal Services will be present at the first annual Roger’s Road and Eubank’s Road
Community Neighborhood celebration on Saturday, April 18.
• Animal Services will be present at the Saturday, May 9, 2015, My Brother’s Keeper Youth
Summit.
• Animal Services will be participating in Orange County’s Earth Evening, an event for children
on April 24, 2015.
