COMMUNITY SPAY/NEUTER
• YTD there have been 371 pets sterilized through the community spay/neuter program.
• November 11 Spay/Neuter Event – 35 names were submitted and to date 26 people have signed up their pets
for free spay/neuter.
• Reminder – we would like to have the BOCC adopt a resolution to support Spay Day in February as we have
done in previous years. The resolution will be prepared for your review in January 2015.
RABIES
• YTD we’ve had 20 confirmed rabies cases (12 raccoons, 3 foxes, 3 bats and 2 skunks).
• YTD we vaccinated 1,166 animals (692 dogs, 474 cats) at low cost rabies vaccination clinics. There is one final
clinic this month that is not included in these totals.
PET INSURANCE
• We are looking into a partnership with a company named Trupanion to offer a 30 day free trial to all owners
who adopt a pet from us.
• Trupanion covers 90% of all associated costs for a pet’s medical care after an initial $500 deductible is met.
• Example: A dog is adopted and chews up and swallows 12 socks in his new home. The vet bill for this incident
totals $2500. Trupanion will pay for $1800 and the adopter will be responsible for the remaining $700.
STAFFING UPDATES
• A new Animal Control Officer joined our staff last week.
• One of our contract veterinarians gave notice that she will be relocating next month; the process is underway
to find a replacement.
• Staffing efforts are also in progress to fill three (3) vacant FTEs: one (1) Animal Control Officers, one (1)
Veterinary Health Care Technician, and one (1) Animal Care Technician.
SHELTERING HIGHLIGHTS
• We received 254 pets in October. Of these animals, 173 were “live releases,” and our live release rate was
85% (adjusted) for the month.
• We adopted out 63 dogs and 136 total pets during “Adopt a Dog Month.”
• We euthanized 82 animals during October. The average number of animals euthanized in October from 2009-
2013 was 140 pets. This translates to a 41% reduction in euthanasia.
• Comparing the first 3 quarters of 2013 and 2014
o Intakes are down 10.86% (2,266 vs. 2,542), and we still seem to be on pace to receive less than 3,000
animals for the year for the first time in our history.
o We adopted 1,144 pets, an increase of 2.33% compared to last year.
o The number of animals euthanized is down 13.53% (556 vs. 643). As with intakes, last year was our
previous record low for this statistic.
