PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 10-16, 2005 as Orange County Government Week
and endorse the "Official for a Day" activities.
BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of
County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in
an effort to educate citizens about county government. A proclamation to acknowledge the
week of April 10 -16, 2005 as Orange County Government Week is provided as Attachment I.
This year marks the fifteenth year that Orange County has celebrated County Government
Week by sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. On this day, April 15, students from the
area high schools are partnered with department heads and management staff during the
morning to gain an understanding of county government operations. After the mentoring, a
mock board of county commissioners' meeting is held whereupon students address issues
often presented to the Board. This exercise provides them with an overview of the legislative
process. An agenda for the day is provided as Attachment II.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopts the proclamation
and endorses the planned event.
