BEAT THE HEAT CAMPAIGN
• January through March 2014
• Twin billboards in Hillsborough (Highway 70 & Highway 86)
• Two spay/neuter days (late January and late February)
• Resolution request to BOCC to declare Spay/Neuter Day in Orange County
• Annual summary of targeted spay and neuter effort
DEER HUNTING WITH DOGS
• Gun season for deer (November 16, 2013 – January 1, 2014)
• Hunting deer with dogs is lawful north of I-85
• Local government is preempted from regulating hunting in NC
• Public awareness of “rights, responsibilities and reporting” (see attached brochure)
• Response protocol involves Sheriff, WRC Enforcement Officer and Animal Control
RABIES & RABIES VACCINATION
• Twelve (12) laboratory confirmed rabies cases year-to-date
o In 2012, there were 12 laboratory confirmed rabies cases in total
• 2013 low cost rabies vaccination clinic total: 1132 (640 dogs; 491 cats)
o 2012 low cost rabies vaccination clinic total: 1087 (632 dogs; 455 cats)
• 2014 low cost rabies vaccination and microchip clinic schedule forthcoming soon!
• 2013 Microchip Effort—56 at 4 clinics
o 2014: 6 clinics scheduled
STAFF DEVELOPMENT
• Two (2) staff are attending the Carolina Unite Conference
o Sponsors are NC Animal Federation and SC Animal Care & Control Association
• Certified rabies vaccinators
o Three (3) staff are completing training to become certified rabies vaccinators
o Discussion with State Public Health Veterinarians about CRV training
Upcoming survey of local health directors
• National Animal Control Association Certification Process
o Two (2) or 3 officers will attend level II Training Academy in Raleigh in April
MISCELLANEOUS
• Twenty (29) dogs and cats were sterilized by SNAP at a recent spay/neuter day at OCAS
• Selection process for Assistant Program Coordinator is nearing completion
