ORANGE COUNTY ARTS COMMISSION
April 9, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.
(Note: March 12, 2018 meeting cancelled due to snow)

Board Members present: Tim Hoke, Chair; Doris Friend, Secretary; Dan Mayer, Ashley Nissler, Delia
Keefe, Marcela Slade, Marlon Torres, Linda Williamson, Tarish Pipkins, Anita Mills, Chris Kubica, Bronwyn
Merritt , Fred Joiner
Board Members absent: Tinka Jordy, Helen Jones
Staff Members present: Katie Murray, Director
I. Hoke called the meeting to order at 6:35 followed by introductions and welcome to our new
members.
II. Friend moved, Nissler seconded to approve the February 12th minutes. Motion passed.
III. Grants Update:
• The grant process is now totally on-line. Katie will begin training sessions soon.
• Marcela, Marlon and Ashley volunteered to assist in translating the on-line grant
process into Spanish.
IV. Director’s Report
• Murray thanked Marcela, Chris, Fred, Doris, Tim, Linda, Delia and Ashley for their
help with the Monumental Voices event. It was a big success.
• Murray announced that we have a new calendar program for the website. It should
be a big improvement.
• The SmArt Initiative, a public/privet partnership for public arts, application is due at
the end of this month. The Town of Chapel Hill is applying for funds to purchase the
Varsity Theater for renovation into a performance arts space.
• The Orange County Arts Leadership Group continues to meet.
• Local Fest at Blackwood Farm is planned for September 29th. The event will focus on
local farms, culinary arts, visual arts, musical events, etc. OCAC has been asked to
jury the visual arts portion.
• Orange County Commissioners have asked Murray to draft a public arts policy.
• Intern Georgia Brunner has been accepted into grad school and will leave us in May
or June. Murray will begin the search process for her replacement.
• Murray expects to receive the findings of the UNC Public Policy Capstone initiative
by the end of this month.
V. Liaison Reports:
• Hoke:
o Murray presented the State of the Arts of Orange County report to the
Visitors Bureau.
• Friend:
o The Hillsborough Arts Council is working on developing a branding and
marketing plan.
o Plans for a face-lift at the Gallery and Gift Shop will include a new door, and
street-scaping at the front of the building.
o Dates to remember: Art in the Heart of Hillsborough, April 21st and
Handmade Parade October 14th. Katie remarked that she wants the OCAC
to have an entry in the parade.
• Mills:
o The new members reception and orientation for the Orange County Artist
Guild was well attended.
o Plans for the 2018 Studio Tour are underway.
o The Artist Guild has been invited to have an Expo at Frank Gallery.
• Mayer:
o Registration for the summer art camps is almost full. Considering expansion
of the program.
o The Arts Center will partner with Odyssey Theater to reinstate the 10 x 10
production. Scripts will be limited to North Carolina playwrights.
o The Women’s Playwrights Festival is scheduled for August. This a Triangle-
wide event.
o The Tibetan monks will be back at TAC May 14-20 to create a mandala.
o The public art policy has been approved by Carrboro.
VI. Advocacy Updates:
• The “Art Moments” presented by local poets at the County Commissioners’
meetings have been going well.
• May 23-24 is Arts Day at the NC General Assembly. This is our opportunity to
advocate for the arts with our legislators. Board members are encouraged to
participate.
VII. State of the Arts of Orange County:
• Murray presented the findings of the 2016-17 report.
