HomeMy WebLinkAboutDSS Board minutes 011218MINUTES ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES January 12, 2018 1 THE ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MET ON FRIDAY:January 12, 2018at the Hillsborough Commons, Hillsborough, North Carolina. BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERS PRESENT:Tamara Dempsey-Tanner, Ann Wilkerson,Susie Enochts, andPat Garavaglia. GUEST:None. BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES MEMBERSABSENT:Earl McKee. STAFF PRESENT: Nancy Coston, Director; Lindsey Shewmaker, Human Services Manager; Sharron Hinton, Human Services Manager; Crystal Mitchell, Program Manager; and Micah Guindon,Fiscal Manager. I.Call to Order and Introductions DSS Chair, Tamara Dempsey-Tanner, called the meeting to order at 9:39am. II.Board Comments Ann Wilkerson thanked Lindsey Shewmaker and Nancy Coston for helping change the meeting date so she could attend. III.Public Comments None. IV.Agenda Changes Pat Garavaglia asked for a quick rundown on the holiday program. V.Action Items On a motion byPat Garavaglia,the Board approved the minutes of December 16, 2017.Ann Wilkersonseconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. VI.Items for Discussion and/or Decision 1.Budget Planning Nancy Coston went over the Budget Overview PowerPoint presentation that was given to Department Heads by the County Manager.It included important dates and general issues related to the submission and approval of the FY2018-19 budget. The Board discussed adjusting its meeting schedule to accommodate the budget process. Ann Wilkerson moved that the February Board meeting be moved to February 12th at 4:00pm. Pat Garavaglia seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. Tamara Dempsey-Tanner moved that the March Board meeting be moved to March 5th at 4:00pm. Ann Wilkerson seconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent. MINUTES ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF SOCIAL SERVICES January 12, 2018 2 2.Holiday Program Wrap-Up Sharron Hintoninformed the Board that the holiday program went well. The Toy Chest served 2,705 children over the two days and gave away 9,412 toys, 2,529 books, and 829 stocking stuffers. Donations were collected from 75 sites around the county. Two special events held this year helped increase toy collections. The “Stuff the Bus” event at the Hillsborough Walmart collected 215 toysand $588 with the help of Chapel Hill Transit. The UNC Men’s Basketball game collected 526 toys and $1760 for the event. The Share Your Holiday program helped sponsor 55 elderly or disabled adults and 335 children. 3.Director’s Report Ten children working with the Family Success Alliance have been added to child care subsidy and there has not been any negative impact to the budget. Staff continue to evaluate how many 4-year olds may need care. The NC FAST implementation of Child Welfare was supposed to begin for Orange County in January. It has been delayed again due to some additional testing that is needed to ensure critical issues have been fixed. The new start date is February 26th for Orange County. VII. Announcements Ann Wilkersonmoved to adjourn the meeting at 10:57am.Susie Enochtsseconded the motion. The motion was carried without dissent.
