Board Members present: Tim Hoke, Chair;Doris Friend, Secretary;, Chris Kubica, Bronwyn Merritt, Dan Mayer,Ashley
Nissler, Helen Jones, Delia Keefe
Board Members absent: Tarish Pipkins, Helen Jones,Anita Mills, Tinka Jordy,
Staff Members present: Katie Murray, Director, Georgia Brunner, Intern
I. Hoke called the meeting to order at 6:30.
II. Nissler moved, Mayer seconded to approve the October 91" minutes. Motion passed.
III. Murray distributed the 2018 meeting schedule. Please note: there will be no meeting in December, 2017.
The October, 2018 meeting is on October 8th not the 151h .
IV. Murray distributed a sign-up sheet for the up-coming listening sessions. Board members are encouraged to
sign up for at least one session that is not in your area of specialty.
V. Board Member Discussion:
• Murray announced that Consuelo Marshall has resigned. This leaves us with three vacancies.
• Following discussion, Hoke moved, Mayer seconded to approve Marlon Torres' application for
membership. Motion passed.
• Marcela Slade's and Heather Lewis' applications for membership are still under consideration.
VI. Use of Returned Grant Funds:
• OCAC granted $2,265 to the "Shimmer" event in Carrboro. These funds have been returned due to
the postponement of the event. Following discussion, it was agreed that a portion of these funds be
used to establish a Friends of Orange County Arts non-profit. Murray has postponed the
preparation of a proposal in this regard until after the eight listening sessions have been completed.
VII. Director's Report
• Thanks Tim, Chris,Ashley, Helen and Doris for their work on the Plein Air event and awards
reception.
• Thanks to Tim, Ashley, Helen, Doris,Tinka,Tarish and Delia for their presence at the unveiling of the
Bee Hotel on Saturday, 11/4.
• Board members are reminded to send Georgia a brief personal bio and photo (If available).
• Murray continues to work with the ad hoc Cultural Arts Group on exploring the feasibility of an arts
center for Orange County.The group is beginning to unify around the concept of a community
cultural arts center for the county.
• The Carolina Inn has decided not to select any of the pieces juried and submitted by OCAC.
• The "Paint it Orange" plein air event in partnership with the Hillsborough Arts Council was a success.
As of this date, 15 paintings have been sold and the remainder will be on display through the end of
the month. A debriefing meeting has been held to identify improvements for next year's event.
• Murray has made AEP data presentations to five community groups with several more scheduled.
• Murray has negotiated a sponsorship agreement with WCHL for OCAC"Heart of the Arts" spots as
part of our marketing outreach.
• The art map has been a big success. Five-thousand were printed and some distribution sights are
already asking for more.
• OCAC has been invited to participate in UNC's "Arts Everywhere" on-campus event in April, 2018.
Details TBD.
• Several board members praised Tarish Pipkin's "Just Another Lynching" puppet performance.
Murray is hoping to meet with the Stone Center to book a performance and The Arts Center will
include it in their spring schedule.
VIII. Liaison Reports:
• Hoke: Visitor's Bureau—The Visitor's Bureau reports their revenue is up but they continue to be
concerned about the impact of local Airbnb(s). Tim will serve on a sub-committee that is exploring a
potential new facility to attract visitors. At present,the focus is on a student sports facility.
• Friend: Hillsborough Arts Council—Katie presented the AEP data to the Council's Board. This
generated a lot of very positive and clarifying discussion regarding the role of the Arts Council and
the role of the Arts Commission. The Arts Council will be starting their strategic planning process in
early 2018. OCAC will be hosting a "Orange County Employees Day" at the Arts Council on Tuesday,
November 215T. Refreshments and discounts on gift shop items. This is part of our outreach effort
to encourage Orange County employees' participation in the arts.
• Most board members participated in the OCAG Open Studio Tour. Always a great event.
• Mayer—Carrboro Arts Committee: The Committee has approved "rainbow" crosswalks in Carrboro.
The development of a public art policy has been added to the Carrboro staff's work plan. The Arts
Center has engaged a private consulting firm to explore the fundraising feasibility for a capital
campaign.
Hoke adjourned the meeting at 8:00 p.m.
