Other Comments:
Having served on numerous civic boards and volunteered actively in the community, I am
directly aware of the important role local volunteer boards play. In addition to my
experience with the school system, I also enjoy participating in a broad cross-section of
the community n working to oenhance the experience for all of us in Orange County. I
am a product of the Durham school system, having attended public school at all levels,
including graduating from one of our State Universities prior to graduate school. My
professional life led me to an assignment in Asia prior to returning to this area. While in
Asia, I held a seat on the Board of Directors of the American School in Singapore. The
interest I have in education runs deep and is related in part to my current employment at
Duke University. In addition to my direct invovlement in Orange County volunteer civic
activities, I participate in numerous community organizations. My wife Lara and I
encourage our 3 children to be active in their school and community experiences.

I have a great interst in supporting community efforts to improve the environment. for
diverse individuals. In both employment and volunteer positions, I have worked with
community organizations representing diverse communities and have made inclusion of
such activities an important part of my career and personal focus. I believe in the
fundamental right of all people to have full access to public services, employment and
living opportunities, and individual dignity. I also believe it takes individuals dedicated to
ensuring there is a safe place far those who experience discrimination to turn to in order
to help resolve specific situations and to create a broader community climate of
acceptance.
I am also very intersted in participating on the Orange County Board of Health. Although
the current vacant position is for a veterinarian, should a position for an at-large member
arise, I would be happy to discuss such a position with you. I have extensive experience
in working with local public health at both the local (county) and state levels as both an
