PURPOSE: To adopt a resolution adjusting the starting salaries of the Sheriff and Register of
Deeds positions.
BACKGROUND: At. the November 15, 2005 meeting, the Board of County Commissioners
adopted a resolution giving notice of adjustment in salaries for the Sheriff and Register of
Deeds positions.. This resolution established the starting salary for the Sheriff's position as the
minimum of Salary Grade 31 in the Orange County Classification and Pay Plan. ~ It established
the starting salary for the Register of Deeds position as the minimum of Salary Grade 29 in the
Orange. County Classification and Pay Plan.
The November 2005 resolution provided that the salaries would not be altered or amended until
after the persons elected Sheriff and Register of Deeds in the 2006 election take office.
Thereafter, it provided the Board of Commissioners may adjust the starting salary of the
candidate elected .considering the years of service and performance and related experience of
the person elected.
Pursuant to the November 2005 resolution, the attached resolution establishes the starting
salaries of the Sheriff and Register of Deeds. The salaries shown are the current salaries for
the Sheriff and Register of Deeds.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: None
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopt the attached
resolution effective December 4, 2006.

Resolution Adjusting the Starting Salary of the Sheriff and
Register of Deeds Positions Effective December 4, 2006
The Orange County Board of Commissioners, as authorized by North Carolina
General Statutes.153A-92 and Article II, Section 3.14 of the Orange County Personnel
Ordinance, has set the salaries of the Sheriff and Register of Deeds as provided below
effective December 4, 2006.
• The salary of Sheriff Lindy Pendergrass is $110,555 assigned to Salary
Grade 31 in the Orange County Classification and Pay Plan.
• The salary of Register of Deeds 7oyce Pearson is $78,817 assigned to
Salary Grade 29 in the Orange County Classification and Pay Plana
All other compensation elements including expense allowances are as set forth in
the Orange County Personnel Ordinance.
The compensation of the Sheriff and Register of Deeds shall change from time to
time according to the Orange County Classification and Pay Plan pursuant to
Performance Reviews conducted by the Chair of the Board of Commissioners or where
that Plan prescribes automatic changes in salary or as otherwise changed by Resoh~±ion of
the Board of Commissioners.
