BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service is an award given by the State of North Carolina as a recognition for all that they do in the community. Each county is allowed to submit up to five individuals, groups, or businesses for this award. Earlier this year the Clerk's office advertised for and received fifteen nominations for this prestigious State award. Nominations were judged by six Orange County citizens and the top five vote-getters were submitted to the Governor's Office. The top vote getter, the only person selected by all six judges, was nominated for a new award, called the North Carolina Outstanding Volunteer Medallion. This award will only be given to 20 recipients statewide and we have not been.told if our nominee will be a recipient. The five North Carolina Award winners are: Me an Jones The Arc of Oran e Count Bert Liverance Habitat for Humanit of Oran e Count Jud Lohman Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill Patricia Merriman Duke Communit Hos ice Abb Phel s Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill Those other volunteers that are nominated are awarded as Orange County Key Volunteers. Those volunteers include: Karen Doran Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill Sue and Mike Faulkner World Da of Pra er Liz Garman Oran e Count Animal Services Geor e Geor e Ralei h-Durham Air ort Authorit Shelle Golden Oran e Count Ra e Crisis Center Janet and Caroline Lon Oran e Count Animal Services Jim Parsle Cameron Park Elements School Marie Pauwels Oran e Count Animal Shelter Wend Pease Duke Communit Hos ice Kristin Tucker Ronald McDonald House of Cha el Hill FINANCIAL IMPACT: None. RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board acknowledge the Orange County Key Volunteers and North Carolina Award winners during the November 14th meeting with the presentation of awards by the BOCC. Volunteer Biographies Megan Jones Megan has a developmental disability, but she has not let that slow her down. Megan's influence is well known in Chapel Hill, she has represented to Arc at Rotary meetings, and fundraiser and events. Sheds an ins iration to clients, families and staff. Bert Liverance Bert has shown great leadership and commitment in chairing the Construction committee for years and for completely running our fire safety program: He has functioned as an extra staff member with the s rinklers, takin full res onsibilit for installation Judy Lohman For 13 years Judy has served the Ronald McDonald House with her time, compassion, and best of all her talent by single-handedly ublishin the bi-month) volunteer newsletter. Patricia Merriman Many of our volunteers specialize in one type of hospice care; Patricia does it all. She lovingly supports our community through hours s ent with our d in nei hoors and their families. Abby Phelps For over. 13 years, Abby has run the front desk at the RMH. Even with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, Abby drives from Raleigh to answer phones, write thank you notes, and assist guests and visitors. Karen Doran Karen has served countless families and children at the Ronald McDonald House over her 8.5 years of commitment. Karen has put in countless hours over the years, and it's the understanding and motivation that she brin s to the RMH services that is award winnin . Mike and Sue Faulkner Mike and Sue work with children, adults, and the elderlyto bring the communit closer to ether for activities and events. Liz Garman Liz's dedication and love for the shelter dogs is a precious asset. Her involvement helps to par the 100's of dogs that are adopted with forever homes. George George Since May 2005 George has donated over 513 hours, 4.5 times as many as the average volunteer. George soars to great heights by offerin the hi hest level of services, cou led b a friend) smile. Shelley Golden Since becoming a Community Education Volunteer in 1999, Shelly has been a central part of the Orange County Rape crisis Centers effort to stop sexual violence and its impact through support, education and advocac . Janet and Caroline Long Janet and Caroline are dedicated Shelter volunteers. Their love for the cats is obvious in their work. Jim Parsley Jim has served as a tutor and reading partner for students at Cameron Park since 2003. He is a strong advocate for positive and consistent interaction between students and their communit . Marie Pauwels Marie is a dedicated hard worker. She reports to work early and stays as long as she is need. Her love for the shelter animals is evident in her work. Wendy Pease Wendy works with a large percentage of Alzheimer's patients. Wendy remembers those patients who may be forgotten, advocating for better care, alerting staff to any problems. She serves as a voice for those who have lost theirs. She demonstrates by her caring compassionate presence the lives of those who may seem to have little value and those inca able of rememberin . Kristin Tucker Kristin humbly claims that she contributes in a small way to a very big icture, but after raisin over $21,000 in a first time fundraiser, it is hard to a ree with Ms. Tucker's definition of small.
