HomeMy WebLinkAboutAHAB minutes 110811Affordable Housing Advisory Board Minutes of November 8, 2011 Members Present: Patsy Barbee, Diane Beecham, Anna MacDonald Dobbs, Martha Hoylman, Rashii Purefoy, Nannie Richmond, and James Stroud Members Absent: Alex Babbitt, Lynda Baker and Jonzella Bailey- Pridham, Mark Johnson Staff Present: Roxanne W. Reynolds Welcome /Introduction Patsy Barbee welcomed everyone to the meeting. Public Comments Board members agreed to send a card of condolences to the family of Artie Franklin. Minutes Diane Beecham made a motion to approve the minutes of October 11, 2011 meeting and Martha Hoylman seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously. BOCC Annual Planning Retreat Input A copy of the Orange County Boards and Commission Input and Accomplishment Form was distributed to AHAB. This information is incorporated as an attachment to the minutes. Board members briefly discussed the following concerns /issues to address with the Commissioners. • The interest in more information regarding the process to development a new bond referendum; • The provision of affordable housing in Northern Orange County; and • A forum to educate elected officials /developers regarding affordable housing. Annual Calendar The Advisory Board discussed and reviewed the Draft 2012 Calendar Topics. This information is incorporated as an attachment to the minutes. These are the following items that the board was interested in including in the calendar. • Provide information regarding supportive housing for special populations. • Include a page with information regarding the Town of Chapel Hill Housing Department. • Acquire more information regarding the August page of the 2012 Calendar- Building Integrated Communities. The board agreed to e -mail Tara Fikes with additional input related to the calendar. Communication Plan Anna MacDonald Dobbs reported that Maria Comello, PR Professor at UNC- School of Journalism, would have some openings in the fall to assist with the research and development of the PR campaign. Anna stated that she would follow -up with Comello regarding the process. This information would be available at the next meeting. Report of the Chair Patsy reported that the Joint Orange Chatham Community Action Weatherization Program (JOCCA) still have funds to repair homes. James Stroud stated that he had concerns from residents regarding the application process for the Weatherization Program. Patsy stated he could contact Doug Dixon at 919 -542 -4781. Board members were asked to remind applicants to submit income documentation with their application. It was noted that the department will include an advertisement on the website regarding the Weatherization Program. Additional applications were available at the meeting. Patsy Barbee presented Rashii Purefoy with a card from the Advisory Board for the loss of her niece. Department Report • Presently, there are no updates regarding Whitted Forest Apartments. • Club Nova Apartments are close to being transferred to Community Alternative Supportive Abode (CASA). • The BOCC should approve the new members at the meeting next week. One of the potential members is unable to serve because she lives in Chatham County. Other Business The Board asked if Tara Fikes could seek information regarding foreclosures in Orange County. The members were also interested in process for publishing a Call for Proposals to the County's non - profit organizations for the remaining $143,558 in affordable housing bond funds. The next meeting will be held on December 13, 2011 in Chapel Hill. James Stroud made a motion to adjourn the meeting and Rashii Purefoy seconded the motion. The motion was approved unanimously.
