HomeMy WebLinkAboutAging Advisory Board minutes 071117Advisory Board on Aging Board Meeting July 11, 2017 Introductions and Announcements Review Domains Each group introduced main issues, outcomes, and needs from advisory board Six domains will have ongoing work groups- work groups will meet quarterly An advisory board member will be a liaison in order to represent domain on board Outdoor Spaces & Building- Jenny Womack • Main issues • Understanding of who plans, creates, and develops outdoor spaces • Better communication to inform older adults about how public spaces are made available — is the public spaces designed with intentional decision to include older adults in planning • Usability of natural spaces Hopeful outcomes • Increase availability and accessibility of natural spaces by older adults (for both mobile and immobile residents) • Create and implement county standards for outdoor spaces How Advisory board may contribute • Appoint representative from advisory board to be represent on-Intergovernmental board, (name ?) • Facilitate collaboration of public and private spaces Housing- Ryan Lavalley • 2 subgroups with focus on housing repair and affordable housing • New Housing Director- Sheryl Hampton • Main issues • Need to modify/ create affordable housing, modify /repair existing housing • Assist coordination of housing organization repairs • Informing community about housing inspectors Hopeful outcomes o Collaboration with housing repair agencies will become separate workgroup facilitated by Lavalley • Increase affordable senior housing, spread out throughout county • Inter- government housing committee to target specific policies • Increase mental health services of long -term care facilities How board may contribute • Hire Housing specialist of Housing Department • Develop partnerships to ensure affordable senior housing July 11, 2017 Transportation- Lisa Berley • Main issues 2 • Outreach to public regarding transportation options (senior services, public bus system) • Healthcare and transportation concerns • Transit dependent individuals who have medical appointments • A need for healthcare services to understand transportation concerns with medical appointments Hopeful outcomes • Increase public transportation hours (depending on needs assessment) • Expand/ support driver program with needs that are not served by public system • Affordable options for northern Orange County residents who are wheelchair bound • Same day service transportation for urgent care • Door to door services across county lines • Education for transportation dependence for emergency support • Wide distribution of transportation call center /helpline • Increase comfort and confidence to ride public transportation How board may contribute • Assist with contacts in healthcare world to bring into working group • Share transportation information with county residents Social Participation- Myra Austin • Main Issues • Accessibility issues for residents to become involved • A need to improve communication to adults living alone • Continue to provide diverse /accessible opportunities for older adults Hopeful outcomes • Promote social inclusion/ cohesion with increase in transportation, access to events, provide social connection • Uphold older adults as important individuals in community (cultural humility, sensitivity) • Work refugee populations, expand dementia capable community • Intergenerational programming • More programming to invite secluded individuals ■ Video presentation to invite secluded individuals How board may contribute o Board members to be involved in Seymour /Passmore center to promote social participation and inclusion July 11, 2017 3 Civic Participation and Employment- Yvette Missri, Mike Komives • New Older Adult Employment specialist- Mike Komives • Komives will facilitate workgroup • Program planner for best practices will be completed at end of July • Main Issues • Focus on employees and employers to benefit older adults in the workforce • Addressing age discrimination • Hopeful Outcomes • Workshops including resumes, networking, interviewing • Create pathways for older adults to obtain pathways of jobs, entrepreneurships, volunteer/ internship opportunities • Campaign employers regarding benefits of mature employees (town award given) • Tax credits for employers who hire mature adults • How board may contribute o Develop contacts with businesses in community (age - friendly employers), connect them to Komives Community and Health Services- Mary Fraser, Yvette Missri • Main Issues • Aging in place • Ensure access for accessible and affordable resources throughout life span • Hopeful Outcomes • Expansion of budget for additional resources as aging population grows • Provide support for adults through volunteer connect (pay bills, budget) • Emergency preparedness- collaboration with EMS • Collaboration pilot procedures with healthcare agencies • Collaboration with faith -based community • Expanding neighborhood connections • Focus with long -term care • How board may contribute o Representative on board with workgroup to contribute with outcomes Board member assignments & next group meeting • Outdoor Spaces & Building: Mary Altpeter July 24, 9- 10:30am • Housing: Dick White TBD • Transportation: Alex Castro TBD • Social Participation: Donna Prather TBD • Civic Participation and Employment: Colin Austin, Winston Liao TBD • Community and Health Services: Yvonne Mendenhall July 14, 10 -12pm Peggy Cohn, Heather Altman Next meeting: Tuesday August 8, 2017, Passmore Center from 1 -3PM
