Options for Food Waste Diversion- Janine Ralph, Senior Environmental Planning Manager, HDR Coproration, Richmond Hill,

Gerringer presents Summary of Separated Organics Publicly Managed in Orange County FY 14 -15
o Over 17,000 tons of organic waste is currently collected in Orange County, equaling 20% of waste stream
Ralph presents Organics Diversion PowerPoint
• No current known diversion program offsets the complete cost of running the program
• Many programs began as a duel collection of yard waste /food waste in split body trucks collecting food waste
along with either recyclables or garbage
• Some have comingled yard waste and yard waste collection
• Most have evolved to separate stream collection
• More food waste is collected and processing cost is less when separate
• Would recommend keeping yard waste stream separate from food waste, based on current
collection process in Orange County
• Retro- fitting existing trucks is not recommended for duel collection. Replace trucks at end of current contracts
(if contracted) or as existing trucks reach end of life
• County Waste and Recycling Centers could take larger role and expand with food waste collection
• Existing mulch sales could be impacted
• Ward suggests a possible food waste collections at the Farmers Markets, both in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough

o Walnut Grove HHW site is currently open more hours than Eubanks Road HHW. Eubanks Road HHW hours
will expand after improvements are made next year.
• Shred -a -Thou Survey Results - Written report only
• Preliminary State Per Capita Waste Reduction Percentage for FY 2014/15 - Not addressed orpresented
