L Call To Order
Chair Monica Richard called the meeting to order at ?? p.m.
IL Introduction
Members of the HRC introduced themselves and gave some background of their
affiliation with the commission.
III. Minutes Approval
A quorum was not present so the November 14, 2016 and December 12, 2016 minutes
were tabled until the January 9, 2017 meeting which ended up being postponed to
January 17, 2017.

IV. County Updates
A. The commission has received a copy of the crisis plan developed by the Charlotte -
Mecklenburg HRC.
B. DSS is holding an Anti - Harassment Training on January 19, 2017. Uvonka Mercer
stated that she was attending.
V. Subcommittee Updates
A. Diversity Matters: As previously announced the book, "No god but God" is the
chosen book for the Community Read which is held in March. The planning for
this event is going well.
B. Human Relations Forum — January 29, 2017 will explore "Religious Freedom,
Pluralism and Islamophobia ". The program and the flyer for this event are
finished. Caterer and venue are reserved.
C. Community Relations
1. Pauli Murray Award Ceremony — Discussion held as to whether or not the
HRC would be prepared to hold the event on February 26, 2017 as planned. At
this time the venue is reserved and a speaker has been notified and accepted.
There was only one youth nominated and no adult or business.
2. Human Relations Essay Contest for middle and high school students: we
received 11 middle school essays and 3 high school essays.
D. Community Justice
Discussion was held about the logistics of the "hot line ": 1) what is to be done
with the call 2) how to educate people about who to call 3) resources need to be
consulted as to what roll they could play in this service.
VI. Other Business /Announcements
Audrey Spencer - Horsley asked the board to think about what they thought might be the
best number of members for the commission to have so they could more easily have a
quorum and be able conduct the business of the county.
