Topic C
Discussion Point: Review of August 2014 Minutes
Decision /Vote(s): Brief discussion of minutes.
Action Item: No vote taken because of lack of quorum.
Discussion Point: Director's Report
Decision /Vote(s): The decorative bench placed within our public art project at the Orange County Public
Library in Hillsborough has been removed. The bus stop in front of the library has been relocated to the
other side of the library's entrance, and some other bench has been installed at this new bus stop
location. Twenty -four (24) writers attended the "Sense of Place" writing workshop on September 5th with
2014 Piedmont Laureate Carrie Knowles at the Burwell School Historic Site in Hillsborough. Staff met with
the new County Manager and gave her information about the Arts Commission's programs and services,
including information about the previous "public vs. private" debate and our previous public art program
(which we would like to re- start). Americans for the Arts' Arts and Economic Prosperity IV is coming up.
We will need to budget for it over several fiscal years. BOCC abstract deadlines (to be on their meeting
agenda) are approx. 2 -3 weeks prior to their meetings. If we want to present at one of their meetings
(about public art or otherwise), OCAC board members should be meeting with them first. There are some
changes to the OCAC board meeting schedule. The 11/10 meeting will be at the Orange County Public
Library in Hillsborough; the 12/8 meeting will be at OWASA in Carrboro.
Action Item: None.
Discussion Point: CHOCVB Liaison, Ad Hoc Committee Updates
Decision /Vote(s): Deb Hepp reported on the most recent Visitors Bureau board meeting. Nick Dido of the
Kenan Institute has created a "brand" for the state at the request of the NC Department of Commence:
beaches, mountains, and basketball (plus southern hospitality). A marketing firm in Charlotte will help
design the brand. Deb Hepp would like another OCAC board member to attend the October 15th CHOCVB
board meeting, as she will be out -of -town. The Marketing Committee discussed how to present OCAC at
our Festifall booth — posters, pamphlets, focusing on grant recipients (especially individual artists) with

images and testimonials. OCAC board members are still needed to help staff the booth at Festifall on
October 5th in Chapel Hill.

Discussion Point: Nominating Committee
Decision /Vote(s): The Nominating Committee will present their slate of officers ( Devra Thomas - Chair,
Lindsey Alexander — Vice Chair, Katherine Dickson — Secretary) at our October 2014 meeting for a vote
(when there will hopefully be a quorum).
Action Item: None
Discussion Point: Old Business /New Business /Post- Mini - Retreat
Decision /Vote(s): OCAC Board Members are setting up meetings with BOCC members to discuss funding
of public art and /or organizational structure. Devra Thomas has met with the new County Manager, and
someone from her office will be attending board meetings of the various Orange County boards and
commissions. Devra Thomas will distribute a spreadsheet for OCAC board members to sign up for
advocacy.
