I. Hoke called the meeting to order at 6:30.
II. Katie asked for darification about Item 8 in the August minutes. Following discussion, it was
agreed that OCAC could be the locus of facilitated discussion(s)to explore various ways
artists respond to issues such as racism, politics, social justice,etc. Mayer moved and
Nissler seconded to approve the August,2017 and September,2017 minutes. Motion
passed.
III. Board Member Discussion:
• Hoke moved that Chris Kubica be approved to serve as V ce Chair. Friend seconded.
Motion passed. Hoke said he would be calling a meeting of the Executive
Committee in the near future.
• Following discussion of our continued strategic effortsto recruit board members
with an emphasison diversity, performing artsand community involvement, Friend
moved to approve the volunteer application of Linda Williamson. Hoke seconded.
Motion passed.
• It wassuggested that the up-coming listening sessionsto be held in November will
be another opportunity to identify potential board members.
IV. Use of F;bturned Grant Funds:
• OCAC granted $2,265 to the "Shimmer" event in Carrboro. These funds have been
returned due to the postponement of the event. Following discussion, it was agreed
that a portion of these funds be used to establish a Friends of Orange County Arts
non-profit. Murray agreed to prepare a proposal for presentation at the November
board meeting.
• We are expecting some additional income from the Rein Air event at the end of this
month. The Town of Hillsborough has expressed an interest in a mural on the wall
of the municipal parking deck. Pending funding,we will explore this opportunity
further.
V. Director's Report
• Thanks to Chris Kubica, a Google calendar has been setup. Murray will send the link
to the board. Board members are encouraged to subscribe
• Grant checks were presented at the October County Commissioners meeting.
Thanks to Tim and Delia for attending.
• Thanks to all the Board members who attended the "State of the Arts In Orange
County" event on October 5th. We had excellent attendance by both local and state
officials and area arts organizations.
• Murray continues to work with the ad hoc Cultural Arts Group on exploring the
feasibility of an arts center for Orange County.
• Murraywill be conducting aseriesof listening sessionswith awide variety of
community members, local officialsand artists. 9iewill soon be sending out a
schedule. Board members are asked to sign up for a least one session, preferably
not in your area of expertise.
• There has been no response from the Carolina Inn regarding the additional 20
pieces of art were presented for review.
• Pans for the Rein Air Paint-Out are going well. Thirty-two artists have registered
with more anticipated. Landscape artist .John Beerman will jury the entries at
5:00p.m. on Friday, October 20th followed by a reception and sale at 6:00 at the
Hillsborough Arts Council gallery. Board members are encouraged to attend.
• Murray announced that she has received mostly positive feedback regarding her
arts advocacy article "Election 2017: The Arts Vote" in which incumbents and
candidateswere asked their view on the relevancy of the artsto their respective
communities. Mayer asked the Board for a vote of confidence in support of
Murray's proactive canvassing of the candidates for office regarding their position
on the arts in the community. The Board approved unanimously.
M. Grant SAboommittee Update:
• In follow-up to the August decision to form a subcommittee to review our grant
process, Murray, ,brdy and Mayer met in August but has not met since. M urray wi I I
establish a meeting date and will distribute the minutes of the August meeting to
the Board.
VII. Liaison Fbports:
• Hoke: Visitor's Bureau—The Visitor's Bureau is currently focused on the study
performed by an outside consulting firm on the creation of an amateur sports
facility in Orange County that would draw overnight visitors.
• Friend: Hillsborough Arts Council—The Hillsborough Arts Council isworkingon
many of the same issues as OC'AG We are looking to establish aboard development
committee and to update HAC's strategic plan. Plans for the Plein Air Event are
going well and the members and volunteers of HAC have been very enthusiastic and
supportive of the event.
• Mills—Orange County Arts Guild(absent): Open Studio Tour coming up November
4th-5th and 11th_12 h
• Mayer-The Arts Center: The "Art Spark" programs of family entertainment are
going well. There will be five concerts between now and April. We have 17
residencies in Title I Orange County schools now through Thanksgiving.
• Mayer—Carrboro Arts Committee: The 20th Annual Carrboro Music Festival was a
success. There is interest in public art in Carrboro. It has been recommended that
the Committee establish a process for moving forward.
