HomeMy WebLinkAboutAdult Care CAC minutes 012116Orange County Adult Care Community Advisory Committee Meeting Minutes January 21, 2016 Meeting convened: Meeting called to order at 3:30 p. m. at the Central Orange Senior Center in Hillsborough, N. C. by Chairman, Max Mason. Attendance: Max Mason, Chair Jack Vogt, Vice Chair Beverly Foster, Member Deborah Rider, Member Yvonne Mendenhall, Member Suzanne Haff, Member James Bartow, Member Gloria Brown, Member Will Lang, Prospective Member Charlotte Terwilliger, Ombudsperson Inas Al- Rawas, Ombudsperson in Training Mary Fraser, County Department of Aging Yvette Missri, County Department of Aging Minutes, November 19, 2015 Review and correction: Yvonne Mendenhall was in attendance at November 19 meeting. With this correction, the minutes were approved. Ombudsperson Report, Charlotte Terwilliger Charlotte confirmed that she indeed is retiring! Her last day of work is January 29. Max and other committee members commended Charlotte for her many years of outstanding service to the committee and her work to improve assisted living and nursing home care in Orange and other counties. Charlotte thanked the Committee members and introduced her successor, Inas Al- Rawas. Inas is in training, and while that is occurring over the next few months, Carmelita Karhoff, Durham County Ombudsperson, will be available to help our Committee, serving as interim Ombudsperson for assisted living facilities and family care homes in Orange County. County Department of Aging Report, Mary Fraser. Mary discussed the following initiatives of the County Department of Again • The Department, with the support of the County Aging Advisory Committee, is once again offering the Sharp Direct Care Service Awards. CNAs and other staff who directly serve residents in assisted living and nursing facilities, family care homes, and in home care in the county are eligible for the awards. This is the second year that the awards are being given. In last year's successful awards program, 27 direct care workers were nominated, and six awards for excellence in direct care for the elderly were given. This year, the Department of Aging hopes to receive more nominations of direct care workers from more facilities. Nominations will be open from February 1 thru the end of March. Nominations may be made by administrators, staff, residents or others familiar with the care provided to residents in assisted living or nursing facilities, family care homes, or at home by direct care staff in the county. Nomination forms are available on the County Department of Aging web site. • The County department of Aging is starting an initiative to encourage assisted living and nursing facilities in the county to begin, expand, or strengthen programs in which volunteers are involved in visitation or activities for the benefit of residents in these facilities. Yvette Missri of the Department is coordinating this initiative. She made a presentation to our Committee on it in November, and Suzanne Haff of the Committee is our direct contact with Yvette as she goes forward. In this year's "Long -Term Care Collaborative" program of the County Department on Aging, the theme will be on palliative /comfort care for residents in assisted living and nursing facilities, family homes and in home care. Palliative or comfort care is designed for persons who face death or life threatening or serious illnesses. Several nursing homes, e. g., Brookshire and Signature Healthcare, and a number of family care homes, e. g., Livewell, have signed up to work with the Department of Aging to improve the palliative /comfort care for their residents. Last year, this collaborative program involved "Music and Memory" and was quite successful. The expectation is that "music and memory" will be part of the palliative /comfort care activities. Yvonne Mendenhall, CAC committee member, is involved in this collaborative program to improve palliative /comfort care in facilities and homes. • The County Department of Aging will be sponsoring a presentation by Dr. William Thomas, a national authority on dementia and aging. The presentation will take place on April 17, 2016 at the Friday Center, UNC- Chapel Hill. Mary urged CAC members to attend. Their will be a $15 admission fee, but Mary is attempting to get the fee waived or reduced. for CAC and also Nursing Home committee members Welcome to Gloria Brown, New Committee Member, and to Will Lang, Prospective New Member. Max Mason welcomed Gloria Brown and William Lang to the Adult Care Home Community Advisory Committee. Gloria has already been appointed by the County Commissioners. She will be attending a field training at The Stratford with Charlotte next week. She will also need to visit a family care home as part of her training. Gloria lives in Hillsborough, works at Piedmont Health, and said she is looking forward to serving on the Committee. Will Lang also lives in Hillsborough, building a new house there, and he has worked with the American Pharmacy Association and been involved with Hospice of North Carolina. His appointment to the Committee is now before the County Commissioners. The Committee unanimously approved a resolution recommending that the Commissioners appoint Will to the committee. Committee Review and Approval of Visit Reports Carillion Assisted Living of Hillsborough (September 29, 2015), and the Villines Rest Home (September 29, 2015). Committee members making the visits: Suzanne Haff and Deborah Stewart. After a brief discussion, the committee unanimously approved both reports unanimously. • The Stratford (September 25, 2015) and Crescent Green of Carrboro (September 25, 2015). Committee members making the Visits: Beverly Foster and Max Mason.. Following discussion by the committee, both reports were unanimously • Brookdale Meadowmont (November 12, 2015) and Carol Woods, Buildings 5, 6, and 7 (November 12, 2015). Committee members making the visits (Yvonne Mendenhall and Jack Vogt). After a brief discussion, the Committee unanimously approved these reports. Discussion of Department of Again Program to Expand/Improve Volunteer Involvement in Nursing and Assisted Living Facilities and Homes in County: Yvette Missri, who is coordinating this new program, joined the committee meeting and reported on the program. A brief discussion ensued. Suzanne I: aff will be the Committee's point of contact to work with Yvette. Committee members recommended that the program include volunteer participation in activities for residents and also volunteers who visit residents one -on -one, , that college and high school students be among the volunteers, that Yvette coordinate with the activities directors in the facilities and homes in which the program is implemented, and that initial efforts for the program in assisted living facilities be focused on The Stratford or Carillion. County Commissioner Work Session, February 9 The Orange County Commissioners will hold a work session on Tuesday evening, February 9, 7:00 p. m. Max Mason attended a similar Commissioners' work session a year ago, but he is unable to attend this one coming up. He said the Committee should be represented. James Bartow and Gloria Brown agreed to represent the Committee at the work session Adiounment Upon completion of its business, the Committee voted to adjourn at 5:30 p. m.
