PURPOSE: To consider recognizing the North Carolina Governor's Award/Key Volunteers at
the televised November 14, 2006 BOGG regular meeting.
BACKGROUND: The North Carolina Governor's Award Program has existed since 1979. This
award program, which is sponsored by the Governor's Office, showcases North Carolina's most
outstanding volunteers. Through the years, North Carolinians have proven their concern and
compassion for their neighbors by volunteering in their local communities.
Each North Carolina County selects five individuals, businesses, and/or groups to be
recognized for their outstanding contributions to their communities. One of Orange County's
five recipients will be nominated to receive the NC Outstanding Volunteer Medallion.
In the past, Orange County has recognized its outstanding volunteers with an event in their
honor held at the Chapel Hill Senior Center. Because of the imminent move of the Senior
Center from Elliot Rd to the Homestead Road/Southern Human Services Center campus, using
the Senior Center this year was problematic (next year the Seymour Senior Center will be used
for this event).
This year, it is proposed that Orange County recognize these volunteers by having a "meet and
greet" reception before a regularly scheduled Board of County Commissioners meeting, and by
further honoring them at a televised meeting, under Special Presentations, on November 14th at
Southern Human Services Center (6:30pm- reception/7:30pm-meeting). At this time, the Five
Governor's Award winners will be recognized and a short biography of their volunteer service
will be presented. The 10 Orange County Key Volunteers will then be recognized and a short
biography of their volunteer service will be read. The Clerk's Office would be able to then
provide the volunteers with videos of their volunteer recognition.
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The Key Volunteer Event has been budgeted for in the 2006-07 BOCC
approved budget under "Volunteer Recognitions".

RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board recognize Orange
County's outstanding Key Volunteers in 2006 by hosting a reception before a regularly
scheduled BOGG meeting on Tuesday, November 14, 2006, at 6:30 p.m. at Southern Human
Services Center followed by a brief recognition during the meeting, and providing video
recordings to the recipients.
