Old Business
• The agenda for tonight and the summary of the March 16 meeting were unanimously adopted as
distributed.
• No member of the public was present to comment.
Topic A-Board vacancies
• Two positions will open end of June. Applicant for At-large position, Mike Stewart, was
present and introduced himself, describing experience with dog training and equine
rescue.
• Motion was made and seconded to recommend Mike Stewart to be a member. It was
unanimously supported and will be communicated to the clerk. ASAB will address the
other open position at the August meeting.
New Business
Topic A- Presentation by Deborah Cunningham, Director of Eyes, Ears, Nose and Paws, non-profit from
Carrboro
• Provides service dogs to people with special needs, which involves selection and extensive
training of young dogs and their prospective owners. Trained dogs can detect blood sugar
abnormalities in diabetics, and assist physically disabled folks with daily tasks in and out of the
home, promoting owner independence and improved quality of life.
• Demonstrated service dog (Golden Retriever) in training
• Described potential partnership with the shelter to screen appropriate young dogs coming into the
shelter for service training.
• ASAB expressed unanimous support for relationship with the group
Topic B - ASAB unanimously approved inviting the Coalition to Unchain Dogs to the June 15th meeting
to discuss need for support for Orange County residents needing help with fences for their dogs.
Topic C – Animal Services Program Coordinator, Sarah Falin, presented annual review of outreach and
volunteer programs.
• Volunteer hours are up from last year as well as the number of volunteers.
• Rabies clinics provided 883 vaccinations.
• Spay-neuter program performed 256 sterilizations to date, nearly as many as were done all of last
year, so on-track to provide many mare this year
• Litter Patrol program ongoing and appears to be having positive effect.
• Open House on June 4, many volunteers and ASAB members will be assisting with donations
Topic D- Director of Animal Services Bob Marotto distributed material describing the budget
