Meeting Summary

Agenda: adopted unanimously.
Summary of May 16, 2012 meeting: reviewed and adopted unanimously.

ASAB Updates
-- Reappointment of Lori Lumpkin and Aviva Scully
-- Carrboro Appointment Update-Michelle Walker appointed, schedule
orientation for July 13.
-- Orientation for New Members took place June 4 (Kate Doom-Patel and
Jenn Merritt)
-- General Orientation for ASAB; Agreed by consensus to dedicate Aug
meeting to Orientation, it will include info related to:
1. County Policy for Boards and Commissions
2. Potentially Dangerous Dog Appeal Hearings
Partner Profile
--Wendy Royce, DVM, Pet Overpopulation Patrol (POP)-NC: mobile spay/neuter
clinic (rabies vaccination also) has performed 26,000 surgeries since 2004 in
Orange and multiple NC counties, sees patients in shelter parking lot 4-6
days/month.
--Upcoming Profiles
Triangle Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic to be invited in Oct.
Potentially Dangerous Dog Appeals Committee
--Recent Determination: upheld declaration made for Don Davis’ dog “Holly”
Old Business:
Animal Identification Report (Draft): Suzanne asked for text describing ASAB
discussion of having microchip ID provided free with all adopted pets as a goal,
even though it is not financially feasible at this time. Member of public, Margaret
Heath, provided ASAB with copies of documents describing benefits of providing
ID for adopted pets. Bob’s draft with minor edits and Suzanne’s and Susan’s
comments was unanimously and the ASAB asked Kris Bergstrand, DVM, and
Susan Elmore, DVM, to approve final editing changes.
Cat Sheltering Update:
Deanna Rowan addressed the ASAB asking about the possibility of adding a cat
colony room to present shelter accommodations, citing the use of these by other
shelters. Animal Services staff stressed that there was a good rationale for not
having such colony rooms in the Animal Services Center; and also that the 3-
stage process of enhancing cat sheltering would was on a timetable of 18 to 24
months. No other updates on cat caging at this time as the project is on hold
during busy kitten season.
Nuisance Animal Noise Committee Update
Next meeting: 6:30 - 8:00 p.m., June 26, plan is to decide on recommendation to
present to ASAB at August meeting.
Animal Recovery and Sterilization Committee Status Report
Meeting on July 7, plan to research other counties’ policies in order to provide
BOCC with proper context for request for change.
New Business:
Confirmed Rabies Cases YTD: 5 total (2 raccoons, 2 bats, 1 skunk)
Animal Services Update
--FY1213 Budget: approved as submitted, spay/neuter funds increased to $75k.
Staff got modest raises (), and there are 3 staff vacancies at present.
--Open House: very with upwards of 200 people attending.
Ongoing and Upcoming Events
a. Adopt A Cat Month (June)
b. Rabies Clinic – Thursday, July 19, 1:00-4:00 p.m.. Animal Services Center
c. Volunteer Orientation – July 10- 5:30-7:15 p.m. / July 12 10:00-11:45 a.m.
Volunteer Training - July 14 – 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.
