HomeMy WebLinkAboutAging Advisory Board Minutes 091316ORANGE COUNTY ADVISORY BOARD ON AGING Minutes September 13, 2016 PRESENT: Heather Altman, Mary Altpeter, Colin Austin, Peggy Cohn, Winston Liao, Lorenzo Mejia, Yvonne Mendenhall, Donna Prather, Dick White EXCUSED: Teri Driscoll STAFF: Mary Fraser, Yvette Missri, Janice Tyler The meeting was called to order by Chair Peggy Cohn who introduced new Advisory Board member Colin Austin and returning member Heather Altman. The minutes of the August 9 meeting were approved following the motion made by Ms. Altman and the second by Winston Liao. The Chair announced that UNC’s geriatric practice is relocating to the new UNC Hillsborough Hospital campus. Director’s Report Janice Tyler announced that a new permanent employee has been hired as the Seymour Evening Facility Manager. That Center is opened each weeknight until 9:00pm as of September 12. The DSS Social Worker position assigned to the Aging Transitions division has been re-advertised and seven candidates will be interviewed in the coming week. The celebration for the renaming of the Central Orange Senior Center in honor of retired Department on Aging Director Jerry M. Passmore will be held on September 29. Ms. Tyler has been meeting with the architect for the upcoming renovations to the Passmore and places. Long range plans for the Triangle Sportsplex campus include a new 50,000 sq. ft. field house, possibly with a senior walking track. New Business The Chair asked for interest from Board members to serve as the Vice-Chair and Lorenzo Mejia volunteered. Dick White moved and Colin Austin seconded a motion to elect Mr. Mejia. Motion carried. 2017-22 Master Aging Plan Mary Fraser announced that five seniors in UNC’s School of Public Health undergraduate program have been assigned to assist with the Master Aging Plan process. They will have a significant role in the MAP public meetings and work groups. Their first project is to create a power point presentation defining an age friendly community. More than 700 MAP community surveys have already been completed. Surveys will be available through until the end of September. Fourteen focus groups have been held with several trends identified. The results will be compiled for the October meetings. Janice Tyler has completed the key informant interviews with most municipal officials. MAP Leadership Team and Steering Committee meetings will be held in September. The public input meeting are scheduled for October 26 (Seymour Center, 9:00-noon) and October 28 (Passmore Center, 1:30-4:30pm). Continuing Projects Yvette Missri reported on recent Project EngAGE and Senior Resource Team activities. She also promoted the upcoming Brain Health Academy. Mary Fraser announced that the OC CARES project is recruiting a replacement Group Respite Coordinator. This is a temporary, 20 hour per week social work position and interested candidates should contact her. Committee Progress Reports if needed: Dementia Friendly Business Campaign – Lorenzo Mejia Marie Dagger and Mr. Mejia did the training for Chapel Hill Chamber of Commerce, Fidelity Bank, and SECU. Some businesses have suggested shortening training class time. Senior Tar Heel Legislature –Dick White The STHL will identify its five major legislative focus issues in October.
